Exploding clutch
A friend recently blew up the clutch in his '06 Elise at Buttonwillow. Required new clutch AND transmission. Fortunately Lotus covered it because this is a common problem--something about a "clip" that breaks. My '05 is out of warranty soon, so I'd like to avoid this problem. Does anyone know what clip they are talking about, and is there an upgrade?

There's two (popular) failure modes:
- snap a torque strap - snap one of the clips holding the diaphragm spring on the pressure plate Several options for upgrading: - ACT (probably the most popular) - Lotus Sport - TODA - etc. Here's a torque strap failure (post 3 for the photo, note the 3 o'clock position): http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=19436 Here's a clip failure (post 21 for the photo, note the 12 o'clock position): http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=43130 Common enough on cars that get tracked - torque strap failure can do quite a bit of damage to the bellhousing, clip failure usually just means clutch replacement. Sounds like your friend broke a torque strap.
