Hallett CVAR Vintage Race 10/5-7
I went to the Hallett Vintage Races this past weekend, mostly to help support my friend in the #96 Formcar FV.
There were some great looking Loti there also, including this Formula Ford, a beautiful 23B, and several Sevens and Caterhams. The pictured XK-E (3.8 liter straight 6) won the big engine race, followed by the blue, Trans-Am (5 liter V8) Camero. They both ran off from the rest of the field, including some 427 Corvettes and Porsches. I have always listed the straight 6 Jag engines as the best sounding, but the Camero was the best sound of the race Hallett was a pretty and safe track. I look forward to some track time there. The CVAR format was real racing, but with very little contact damage. I think I only saw four cars with minor damage during the entire weekend. CVAR's format is for cars built prior to 1972 with a few exceptions (like Caterham). Fun weekend! |

Wow, they got the safe wall foam padding up. They didn't have it up when I went the weekend before for HST.

The weekend at Hallett was along with a scheduled CVAR event, a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Formula Ford. Of the 41 cars signed up to run in the FF group there were 5 lotus type 61's, and 3 lotus type 51's. In addition there were 3 to 4 Lotus 7's and the 23B shown above running in other groups.
Racing was hot and heavy amongst the various FF divisions, (FF1, FF2, FA, FB, etc.), and a good time was had by most. The exception being those who suffered mechanical problems. Chalmer McWilliams set a new track record in his immaculate type 51 and David Salls won a trophy for the best presented racing Lotus with his type 51. 19 of the 41 FF cars entered hailed form Texas. Hallett is indeed a fun course and thanks to the Stevens family a great place to race. If anyone has a chance to go out to Hallett and play, well they should, as it is an experience they will long remember. Al "phonse" B. Lotus type 61 FF1, Team L.O.S.T. #31 Houston |
