Replace roters vs. new system

From reading the threads it seems that it cost’s around $1,400 to replace the front rotors. How long can I expect them to last? Would it be cheaper in the long run to upgrade the brakes to an after-market system for around $2,800 as opposed to buying those expensive rotors? Of course, you wouldn't upgrade until it's time to repalce the stock ones.

front rotors do not cost that much. You can get a full set(of 4) of aluminium hat lighter weight better than stock rotors for that

The cheapest rotors I know of are ~$240/pair. The EBC Rotors. http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/pr...ory=brake_disc

DBA 5000 rotors through Cantrell Motorsports seem to me to be the best long term deal. $300 per rotor, they're the same all the way around, and $177 for a replacement rotor. These appear to be more durable and of better quality than OEM. I didn't want to try EBC anything.

Cross-referencing your posting about brake pads, at 8,000 miles and 8 track days, the stock rotors on my Exige look good and have plenty of life left in them. The Lotus mechanic advised me they are made from fairly soft metal, but I am not sure what the expected life is or what others are experiencing.

I would estimate the stock rotors are good for at least 15,000 miles if you track the car and a multiple of that if no track use (assuming routine care). After-market replacements for all four rotors can be had for far less than one grand and even as low as about $500.

My car has been tracked just once on stock rotors and about 9000 miles total on the car and my rotors are gone.

Stop braking so much. Don't you know you have a momentum car?

I am looking to replace the rotor with APracing disc, maybe larger disc for my 15 inchs wheel (I will see next week what is the maximnum disc size).

I will machine the aluminum center myself.

But, I will use the stock caliper. The main thing is the disc weight, which should be heavy enought to take the heat and be able to run with pad able to run on street and track. In the next mouth, I will remove the disc to measure the disc weight.

I think that it is not required to change the caliper. Big caliper have the advantage of more pad for reduced wear, and sometime more rigid. But the heat and the brake torque capacity is not changed with big caliper when the brake pedal is not change (of course, if larger piston are used, and the master brake is not changed, the force will be higher for the same pedal pressure, but the pedal stroke will be longer).

I've had a set of EBC rotors on my Bimmer for at least 5 years (4 of which I was running 18" wheels for) and they have been great. I've had good luck with their pads in the past too.

did you or someone measure the front rotor thickness? i'm having a hard time understanding how the rotors could be worn after only one set of OE pads. consumption should not be a one for one. i'm going to my third set or pads with a good bit of track usage (7K miles total, 15 to 18 track days) and i'm just approaching the point of thinking about replacing the rotors in the front. fronts are awaiting the delivery of their third set of pads.

I haven't messured them personally but Curry's auto in chantilly is doing all the work on the car. I trust mike (the manager) as he has an exige. Thus I am exploring a cheaper option to the stock 300+ per rotor.

thats sounds more right. I burned up my 3rd set(1 stock, 2 R4) of pads around 9500 miles and needed rotors then.

I went with the DBA 5000's as well.

I also wouldn't put anything made by EBC on any of my cars; certainly not for track use!

I used a set of DBA 2-piecers on my last car, and I found the metal to be a bit "softer" that I wanted. I switched to the StopTechs and got about ~33% more life out of them, using the same PFC01 pads.
