Street & Track Pads -
My friend told me that he uses the same pads for street and track. He driver’s his car about 10K miles per year. He’s a pretty fast driver. Is this really doable? Any downside? What pads do people use that can do double duty like that?

The Lotus factory pads are quite suitable for track use...as well as the street. I just got 8,000 miles (including 8 track days) of wear out of mine.
There are many after-market replacement choice available.

are you hard on brakes at the track?
if you're not especially brutal on them then i'd say there are few common options. Lotus OE Pagid RS42 "Blue" Porterfield R4 there are other options but these are some of the more common choices. i run a more agressive Pagid pad on the front, as i'm more heavily biased to the track. i'm just over 7K miles, got maybe 6 or 8 track days on OE's, now maybe 10 from the Pagids. i'm due for new fronts again after this weekend.

Like Carl said: Raysbestos ST43 or Carbotech XP8. Both are excellent. My current front Carbotechs have lasted since the CFRA's last LS track day which includes 1 more LS day, one more at Buttonwillow and 9 at Thunderhill. I still have at least one more track day before brakes get too low...

I use Porterfield R4 on the street - they are a race pad, but work pretty well at cold temps. I don't put that many miles on the car, so I can't say whether rotors life is significantly affected.

i've used 3 sets of R4 race pads 2 on my old elise and 1 on the S. they ware the rotors the same as the ST43s if you track them but dont work as well on the track. as others have said if you do mostly street with a track day every now and then the factory pads are fine. carl

Both CountTracula and I had our factory pads crumble by the 2nd/3rd track day. So, I would suggest the Porterfields as a nice alternative.

Contact Matt Nicholson at Carbotech (www.CTBrakes.com). I'm betting their XP Panther Plus would work extremely well for the Elise/Exige.
