BMW Power announced for new Esprit.

Per Pistonheads:

http://www.pistonheads.com/news/defa...?storyId=17619

Hopefully a stout transmission will come with it this time.

I think it's a brilliant move. I for one would not have bough the Elise had it not come with a fullproof powerplant. Applying that to the Esprit is a very good marketing move as well, it will reduce customer dissatisfaction from engine/electrical issues.

...i am such a fan of the new BMW "M" engines - so thats a bit of bitter sweet news. i suppose if your going to go F/I then thats as good of a V8 as any, but that M V8 (V10) is such a N/A piece or amazing harware! - kinda wish they were going with the more sophisticated (imo) solution - but i am sure it will be spectacular non the less!

They aren't using BMW's old 4.4L V8, but a new one that's not yet in any production vehicle...

This is very interesting.. These cars will last forever with the engines they are using.

"The new BMW X6 will see this engine first where it will push out 420bhp however, Lotus don't think that's enough and they suggest that their version will deliver over 500bhp"

I thought 420hp would be enough, but they want to go 500+? I expect the Esprit to be quite the pig by Lotus standards

My money is on Cima.

They've already produced a syncro H 6-speed that will bolt up to the back of a BMW V8.

If they can make it 500lbs lighter than the closest competitor, I'll take that.

Haven't been following Lotus for long? For 25 years the only Lotus available in the US were the Esprit, and for one year the M100 Elan, both of which were 'pigs' by Elise/Exige standards.

Arguing with an engineer is like wrestling with a pig in mud. After a while, you realise the pig is enjoying it.

I was hoping they would use BMW power. Kind of gives both companies a nice PR boost.

I'm not sure how 500 HP will make the Esprit a pig - I doubt Lotus goes with a heavy chassis.

In fact, I would imagine that the same techniques used to make the Elise so light will be incorporated on the Esprit - I think ~2600 lbs s probably what we'll see.

Does anyone know if the 4.4l uses an aluminum block?

Charlie...you take me wrong...I'm pointing out that for a lot of folks here, the only thing they really know of Lotus is the Elise/Exige. The Esprit and to a lesser extent the M100 carried the total mantle for Lotus in the USA for nearly half the time Lotus has been in existence. The Elige was not a continuance of the performance through lightness philosophy of Lotus, it was a return to it after two and a half decades in this market, anyway.

Lots of folks don't consider the M100 a 'true' sports car (whatever that is) because it is FWD. I do not consider myself among that group, having been a rider in a well driven M100, and having seen them at speed on tracks against RWD, more powerful cars.

I've no doubt your M100 Elan could spank quite a few folks on here, myself included, in their Eliges.

don't worry i'm just kdding around, it won't spank anything til i fix that intercooler.

The M100 was originally the 'elise' project, of course since i'm a brit and have an m100, i don't see the same gaps.

As for the FWD argument, each to their own, i have both , like em both.

I'm hoping to see the new Esprit at 2700 lbs and around 450 hp, if not better. And that's more than enough.

After all, Lotus is great and maybe the best in handling, driving sensation and style.

Power to Weight ratio shouldn't be Lotus top priority.
