Elimination of Side Capping Rail Trim Strip?

Is it possible to eliminate the plastic/chrome side rail trim strip on my '78 Esprit without the side capping rail flopping in the wind? I was told the trim strip holds the rail in place and without the trim strip it would lift and flop around under speed. It makes sense but am wondering how much it would actually move or flop. I've seen other Esprit's that the owners left the trim strip off but didn't inquire what they did to reinforce the capping rail. Is there something I can use or fabricate to hold the capping rail in place without the use of the trim strip?
Thanks so much for any input or direction.

Looks like I set a record! My post is the only one since the beginning of March that hasn't received even one reply! I know from lurking since January '14 most members strive to keep their Esprits as stock as possible and whole heartily understand why. So not getting responses doesn't surprise me but I thought I'd try anyway.
I am amazed at the wisdom, knowledge and experience that is in/on this forum and the sharing of it all with other Esprit owners is just awesome. I've learned so much about the cars, both good and bad which has made me appreciate my car that much more.
In spite of no responses thanks to those that have been so helpful in the past with your very informative posts on other posts! 😊

You can remove the trim. It is not functional. I removed mine when I repainted the black '83 and recontoured the top and capping rails to close up the gap left by the trim. You have to remove the capping rails to remove the trim. Take care doing that as the capping rails are attached by bolts and glue.

Actually Lou - I saw your posting but was in the middle of crazy work stuff (and I didn't know the answer) ;-)

However, for some of the S1/S2 related questions, I'd recommend posting in the Yahoo Group S1S2S3 first as the bulk of the earlier Esprit folks hang out there and thelotusforums.com. There are a few S1/S2/S3 folks that overlap here too.

Would love to see your latest photos of your Esprit work ;-)
