Question- 2 gas tanks??

My sisters boyfriend works at a petrol station, and he said the other day a Lotus Esprite pulled in and the guy got out opened up the fuel cap and started the petrol pump he then proceeded to a second cap inserted another pump and started that to, is it a standard car to have 2 petrol caps on? or is it modified do you think?

Most, if not all, Esprits have two gas tanks and two fillers, If I understand correctly, the tanks should equalize through a crossover tube, but it can be faster just to fill both tanks at the same time.

wow...

All esprit's have two fuel tanks, located outboard behind each seat.
Since they are centrally mounted and balanced with a crossover pipe there is no negative impact on balance. Up until the late 90's there was a fuel filler on both sides of the car that would allow both tanks to be filled from either side. Using two pumps concurrently seems silly to me though. The recent Esprits just have a filler on the drivers side.

As far as 'not for speed'... bone stock 185+ mph for the later models - you decide.

I used to park between two rows of pumps and pump both sides at once just to mess with people. And my Esprit was real slow... like low 4 second 0 to 60, high 12 second quarter mile slow.

The 4 cylinder Esprits have fuel tank fillers on both sides of the car. The later V8's while still having two tanks only have a filler on one side.

It was in 1998 that Lotus changed to a single filler on the right hand side so it effects both V8's and GT3's.

Some say it's because it's cheaper to only fit one side out and every little helps on the weight saving too!

*NB - Little known fact #1 - The X180-R had a fixture on the balance pipe which would block it. This was so that on long corners the fuel wouldn't surge out of the tank with the fuel pump in through the pipe to the other, non fuel pump side!

That and the fact it was a lot easier to meet evaporative emissions standards with only one fuel filler cap...

Yep, the two tank issue is a non issue. My Sunbeam has one in each rear wing and a rather large cross over tube as well with just one filler cap. Not sure how many others are the same, but I suspect some Jag's have two tanks as standard equipment as well.....it's probably not all that unusual.

My Europa has twin tanks and fillers, and it was an option on the Mini Cooper 'S' I seem to remember.

I don't understand why anyone would want to pump into both tanks at one time. That means the second hose is laying over the back side of your prize, ugh, I don't think so.

not to mention the time it takes to pay again at the other pump, remove the gas cap, place the hose etc., I think I will just stick with filling up with one hose.

...yes, but then you won't look as cool as the car parked in the middle of the aisle filling from pumps on both sides...

my TVR had two tanks connected with a crossover as well, only one filler. but i think the fuel meter was like... in some other tank somewhere... in typical tvr fashion!

The Esprit was originally designed with two tanks so that when you went into the water they would act as a ballist to keep the car somewhat bouyant. It said in the owners manual that it was best to drive underwater with tanks half full.

...but the submersible model came after the dual fuel tanks: the real reason is because colin chapman's first corollary dictates that two is better than one...
