Looking at the size of his car stable, it would seem to me that money is no object for the guy. Blowing up an engine is no big deal, its just another part of modding an engine, or car racing. Funny comments though LOL "Enjoy your cars", Kirk (I couldnt help it, sorry)

Fish! Get it right! It's "Have fun with your cars!" LOL.....
Fish, the point is this: MOST people can't be affordin' no regular 918 rebuilds. This dude is advocating this stuff (26 psi, etc.) boost as safe for the Esprit. That's the problem, other folks might think this safe for an Esprit. It's not. If he wants to blow up and then rebuild 918s regularly, and can afford to do so, well that's all cool, "Have fun with your cars!" ya know? |

Wrong again Horse Boy!
What I said (as have Mark Feffer, Mark and Maz) is that running more than stock boost on a 918 is a recipe for disaster. Mark F. pointed out that the head gaskets can't take it. I know that with the car not being intercooled, it is not designed for that kind of boost. Several of us have also pointed out that "driving carefully" does not solve the issues the UN1 gearbox will have with the 918's torque, especially if modded. What Kirk posted, which started a lot of this bickering, is that he runs at 26 psi, at least occasionally. I'm not aware of any Esprit V8 owner who wouldn't cringe and the thought of what that could do to a motor. Bias? Uh, no. Just the facts ma'am. By the way, AGAIN, did you read this month's Remarque article on the UN1? You should. |

The wonderful Lotus "torque-to-yield" head bolts will stretch taking out the head gasket with that much boost (actually with a lot less then you claim) IF the cast pistons survive. Hey you don't have to believe us, call Harry Appleby at Viking Motorsports or Jeff Robinson at JAE in California. Ask them why they sell/install so many sets of ARP head studs for the Esprit V8.

Harry out at Viking knows me & my cars very well so... Ask him what I do! I used to live there in So. Cal. and Harry did all the work on my cars. When mine does go... It will get ARP studs, forged pistons, ect. I am also going to put a water/Methonal system on it very soon.
Yes, NOT AT THE TRACK - Because I took a look at the schedule and it was a waste of time I have NEVER gone to any track day that started at 1:00pm. and only gave 3 -twenty minuite sessions! Not to mention the price (I never paid more than $200 anywhare in Calif.) Then comes the run group I was placed in - "Intermidiate 1" the slowest group with a 500hp. car on slicks & with all the other 04 improvements. Now, I don't want to sound arrogant here but I have alot of track experiance with this car and I have a sport Elise with slicks, Ohlins and alot more. I KNOW that my Elise cannot stop or turn as well as my Esprit, not to mention the power deficeit! Pretty much everyone in that group would have been going at a far slower pace (no fun for me or them!) This may have been ok if things started at say... 8:00am. or so. Then I would have had time to prove my competance on track and then been moved to advanced. It simply was not worth loading the car, fuel and driving a 48 foot trailer 6-8 hours for one annoying hour on track. Hopefully there is another "good" track day in the near future that actually gives reasonable track time!!! 2 1/2 - 3 hours. If anyone knows of any, let me know... the Esprit is ready!!!

Actually Kirk,
They were 35 min sessions so a total of 1 hour 45 min which I know isn't exactly 2 1/2 - 3 hours of track time but it is still more that the average HPDE event which is four 25 min sessions (1 hour 40 min). You won't find too many "open" track events around that aren't invitation only. Check with PDA , I think they have an open track event at LRP at some point this summer that is like $250 bucks. www.pdadrivingschool.com Sorry you couldn't make it.

Thanks for the correction. I actually thought the sessions were 25 min. each. That would be ok to drive the Elise there but not a big trailer and everything. Really should be a two day event - I will check into what you sent me

Kirk,
Look into PDA event next month at Pocono, I think its the 20,21 and 22 and they call it the "Grans Slam" weekend. Pocono has three infield road courses and that weekend PDA rents the whole track and on the first day runs all three couses at the same time, I think the schedule gives you 8 sessions the first day mixed up between the three couses. The second and third day are where they combine two of the infield couses by way of the super speedway portion of the track to create a long course (double infield). It's a blast and almost too much track time. You will be sitting out a session of two to cool your jets.
