Lotus Elan
Just recently acquired a 1969 Elan rdstr. Have been fixing sundry bits and pieces and finally have almost where I want it, save for some fine tuning to the Webers. It is fitted with center lock Panasports (a faded goldish or bronze in color). I have need of one center lock Panasport any color and/or a set of good original stamped disc wheels with 3 eared knock ons. Any suggestions where I can find such?

Congrats on the "new" toy! Some tips... #1 Subscribe/join LotusElan.net at http://www.lotuselan.net/forums/index.php #2 Great sources for parts/help A) Dave Bean Engineering - Specialize in classic Lotus parts B) RD Enterprises - Lots of parts, some "un-obtainium" for Elans/Europas C) Kampena Motors - Rich is considered "THE" guy when it comes to Elans #3 Panasports - visit their website. Also RD usually has some in stock (new) #4 Stock K/Os - RD, Bean or Kampena can get re-makes (stronger than original, which tend to split/crack). #5 When using the 3-ear K/Os on Panasports get a wrench and avoid using the hammer! The ears are so close to the spokes of the Panasports that without PERFECT aim you'll bash the wheel. #6 Check out the GGLC's Tech section on Elans. Lots of tips on wheels and other Elan restoration tips. www.gglotus.org Cheers, Kiyoshi GGLC Webguy & multi-Elan owner

Good advice from Kiyoshi, of course--but are you sure your car is a '69?
I have one of the last (original) Weber head twincams in my '67. The switch to Strombergs to meet stricter emissions requirements occured soon after mine was built. Of course, the heads are interchangeable on the short block so a "backdating" upgrade on your car is a possibility.

ED -
Nice to see that you bought an Elan. The guy who bought mine no longer needs to sell it. Good luck w/yours. The above sources are all very good. On my (ex) car, I had the Panasports and bent the "wrench" to clear the spokes, then wrapped it in many layers of tape. So, it wouldn't hurt the wheels' paint. This is an alternative to buying the 1 pc wrench, which might have to be bent anyway. I gave John 5 stock steel wheels w/the car, which he may want to sell. But, as noted above, these are fragile pcs that I wouldn't trust. - Gilbert

Congrats on the purchase, as I used to own a '69 S4 as well. I agree with the others on the fragility of the stock wheels. Mine would never balance, even after completely reconditioning them (including professional wheel truing). Problem is that the inadequate thickness of the center web allows the wheels to flex under high cornering loads. The rims are attached to the centers with rivets, so stress cracks can develop around the holes. The replacement OEM-type wheels are much nice/sturdier than the originals, but are heavier. I say go with a new set of Panasports and enjoy the peace of mind.
