Thumbs up New Elan

Just received my white 1970 Elan Coupe and it is perfect, well almost. I purchased the car off ebay from the executor of an estate sale who even delivered it from Iowa. The original owner purchased the car in the U.K. where he drove it for a couple of years before moving back to the states and bringing the car with him. The car only has 20,000 miles on it and so far Ive managed to find two small stress cracks,I know there are a lot of nice Elans out there but this is probably the nicest one Ive seen. Almost perfect I said, well like most Elans out of storage it needs a water pump so I have ordered the Dave Bean replacement pump[ 700.00 ] change it over to an alternator, add electric fan and swap the rear end over to cv axles. Gee isnt upgraditis great!! Now I have a 70 elan roadster a 70 coupe and a 62 Lotus 7.At this rate I will probably never own an Elise.Never say never.

Hi Rick,
I lived about 45 miles from the guy selling the car and had made a trip to look it over before not bidding on the car. It is a nice car as you have said but will need some tlc and as you said the waterpump, which I hope he told you about before sale was out. I had located the issue and he was not sure if he would report it or not. I took pictures from all angles and if you would like them I can spin of a dics and forward along to you.
He was a car dealer that was stationed in UK for service and bought car for transportation in UK and loved it so much he brought it home.
Any way let me know if you want pictures.

Mark
With too many Elans!
Sorry I had not seen this before.

It certainly looks reasonable. The original owner must have always had the intent of bringing this Elan to the States as it is federal spec with Strombergs and the cross-over tube system for preheating the inlet charge. The wheels are very interesting. I have never seen peg-drive alloy wheels that look anything like these.

Mark,
Thanks for the additional images. The "J" suffix in the VIN confirms it is a federal specification fixed-head Elan. The paint code looks correct as LO4 is Cirrus White. The VIN list at the Sports Car World web site lists the engine number as G22236 and the build or invoice date as May 18, 1970.
Russ

The wheels are JAP Magna's, they are not all that common but I have seen several other sets besides the one's that came with 36/6292. The wheels ar magnesium and are quite light. The set I have are 6 x 13 in front and 7 x 13 in back. Russ if your curiosity is up, stop over and have a look...

Looks a beauty. I'm interested as I worked at the factory at that time and would have had a hand in building that car. The UK registration number is local to Norfolk, do you happen to know who supplied the car originally?

Just interested

Interesting engine fan, too, with the cut down blades. I wonder what the thinking was behind that.

Hi Greg

Most of the blades were broken but not all, thus the water pump failure. Everything unbalanced.

I tried to send you an email earlier but I guess you never received it, anyway ,yes I would love a copy of the pics just let me know what you need from me. The seller did tell me about the water pump and he lowered the price plus he delivered it to Virginia at a very cheap rate. He is a super guy who was a friend of the original owner.
thanks
