1968 Nürburgring Grand Prix

The 1968 F1 season saw the loss of Jim Clark in an early F2 race, but Graham Hill was on his way to clinch his second title (after 1962 with BRM) in the fabulous Lotus 49. It was the year when Colin Chapman had invented the 'tobacco livery'. Wings were growing on the cars and it looked like the designers did not care too much about their stability. It was a trial-and-error period.

The 1968 Nürburgring Grand Prix was the Formula 1 race with more rain and fog than any other before or after that. Here are some pics from the practice and qualifying session on Saturday.

1 Jackie Oliver in a Lotus 49 of Team Lotus
2 Jo Siffert in the Lotus 49 of the Rob Walker Team

Note that Chapman took the higher risk with the wing mounted higher than any other. The pillars did not break in this race, but it wasn't for long until they did.

1 Jochen Rindt signing autographs
2 Can you name the 2 drivers, not the 13 year old (bicycle) driver on the left and not the mechanic on the right, but the 2 in the middle?

1967 World Champion Denny Hulme is correct. The other driver did not participate in the German GP that year, but in others. He just dropped by as a visitor.

Joakim Bonnier

Surprising he didn't have a ride since he won Nurburgring 1000km in '66 for Chapparral co-driving with Phil Hill.

How I think of Hulme in 1968 (as part of "The Bruce and Denny Show"):

It is Jo Bonnier. He drove 8 Grand Prix in '68: 6 in a McLaren-BRM, one in a Cooper-Maserati (South Africa) and one in a Honda (Mexico). Not unusual then.

I still marvel at the bravery or fool hardiness of the drivers.

Take a look at this short clip of a 60's GP at the Ring I just uploaded to Youtube.

Yes, it was a great period with much less professionalism than today. The day we got there we had no press card or a similar document. So we walked up to the postern of the paddock area where the guards were maybe some farmers from around the Nürburgring. A 10 Deutschmark bill was better than a press card and in we walked, having a nice and undisturbed chat with the World Champion and some other drivers.

The dark side however: it was extremely dangerous for the drivers and sometimes even for the spectators. Just remember how many formula 1 pilots lost their life in the sixties and early seventies.
