As I said before, Lotus offers a "S" version of the Elise in Europe which we don't get here in addition to the "R" which is our base car. Why everyone started jumping off bridges when they announced the car with a 280HP version of the 3.5 is beyond me. This will be the entry level engine and a 300HP version will be out around the same time the car reaches the US.

What (besides weight) would be the disadvantage to an AWD Esprit?

AWD

It would not be a proper sports car

But it is much harder to drive and not as fun. I say it will compete with the gt3

so even if the AWD made the car handle and drive better you wouldn't like it because it isn't a 'proper' sports car?

RWD

It would not handle better it would just be easier to handle. It would also slow down the acceleration.

The Esprit isn't a sports car. It's a Supercar/ GT.

Less road feel. Less power. Less fun perhaps (subjective)

And developing a transmission would probably be a pain since there are very few AWD cars that would be suitable donors for that..

Seriously, what they really ought to do is to sell the Lotus GT3!!

Exactly, Lotus is about a pure driving experience. When you start adding fancy control systems to drive for you, it loses some of the purity that makes it so much fun.

If you want an AWD car buy a Porsche or Nissan GT-R

Oh, and I hope if lotus decides to go with a v10 or v12 they go with a low displacement flat plane. A super car should have a distinct sound

I agree BUT they would only sell maybe 1-2 dozen a year worldwide at best if it was $100k plus. It's a seperate thing altogether from the Esprit. The Esprit is a Supercar/ GT and would not appeal to the same buyers. Lotus can sell 300-500 Esprits a year at $130k. And yes, I think numbers should be limted to keep interest and desirability high.

So the GT2 isn't as good because it's harder to drive even though it's faster, but AWD is evil because with it a car is easier to handle and not as fast?

I'll take the opposite position on both points - give me AWD and more HP...

400HP seems good, higher than I was expecting. Hopefully this isn't a number they just made up.

A lot of people who didn't like 2800lbs/285hp, should like 2800lbs/400hp.

Of course we all wish that it was the same power to weight ratio as 2800/400, but more like 2400/350

Plus, they have to leave room for a couple variations of a supercar that outperforms the Evora in a few years. It seems to fill the gap between an Elise and Esprit nicely.

Why is the gallardo superleggera rwd? It is light, faster and handles better...

Actually, it uses an all-wheel drive system engineered by Audi, with a 30% front, 70% rear torque split. Check out First Drive: 2007 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera or other references...

Well I'm still not sold on the looks, but 2800lbs/400hp sounds a lot better to me. The 3 year delay sounds weak... IMHO I think they should launch with the 320 HP & 400 HP cars.

Where did you guys get 2800 lbs from? This little piggy will weigh around 3000. Even if they release a high performance light-weight version, it probably won't lose 200 lbs.
