I can't wait for someone to make this a 3 seater ala the Mclaren F1. This seems like the perfect car to do it.

I saw an old series 1 racing Elise that had the steering wheel and the seat in the middle, but it wasnt wide enough to get 2 other seats alongside

...between the boot, engine, and and retracting hardtop, it's amazing how much they plan to stuff back there...

...i wonder if it'll have a flat rear deck with buttresses similar to the elise?..that could look amazing, but i guess any retractable hardtop rules out a targa configuration...

I have a problem with ragtops after they reach a certain price point.

What a crap article- as far as I know, the convertible has always been a 2 seat roadster. There was never going to be any room for an automatic roof mech with the rear seats in situ.

As for the factory SC being 400 bhp- no chance in he'll. About 330 is more likely - lotus will not warranty the engine themselves so will rely on toyota providing this which means Toyota restrictions on what lotus can and can't do. The engine used in the evora is already supercharged in other cars and about 320hp so with a little lotus fettling 330 I think will be doable. Not to say there won't be a stripped out limited production of track evoras (say an evora rs) but these will be more akin to the recent evora race car with zero comforts if it has anywhere near 400hp. Lotus won't endanger the esprit halo car with an evora of similar performance.

IIRC, there was a (non-federal) Honda del Sol with a retractable hardtop that retained the targa, but I may just be remembering salesman BS.

I remember that too...IIRC it was Japan-only.

Oh Yeah here it is:

Honda CR-X del Sol - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Quote:
TransTop

An option available in Japan and Europe was the TransTop, an electric mechanism which retracted the targa top into the trunk via a push of a button. The roof is operated by flicking two catches above the windows, then holding down a button. The trunk lid raises vertically and two arms extend into the targa top. After the latches have been flicked back up, the arms pull the targa into the trunk lid, which lowers back down with the targa inside.

actually... the entire car and chassis would have to be re-engineered from the ground up. couldn't be done....

the Mclaren F1 deprted the traditional flat firewall in order to place the a longitude drivetrain in the foot print of a transverse car. the way gordon murray accomplished that was to push the drive train into the passanger compartment, and then push the driver deep into the front axle line, - that required the cental seating - then he ploped the passangers on either side of the nose of the drive train and behind the front wheels (in the Mclaren F1 the engine is "in" the passanger comparment, and the driver is "in" the front axle) - the central seating required deep roof openiings, so that why it has the gull wingstyle doors to get in and out of the darn thing.

you could put a chevy bench seat in an evora i suppose - but you could not do an ala McLaren F1 layout in an evora chassis and drivetrain. (or like the matra tard'up posted ((thanks for that picture too btw! little transverse french thingies of the past!!, but i allways like the bahagree "alfa junior z" like matra the most)) - a flat firewall like bench of seats. so it "could" be done "matra" like - but there is not enough width in the evora tub to d othat either.)

nothing about the F1 is gimicy... its very inovative packaging is how it achieved its dramatic performance #'s a traditional layout would have resulted in an ala lamborgini v-12 packaged car....

ditto that article is very old news and what lotus stated way back... cloth top would go int othe rear seat space, that the whole point of the rear seat space! 2+2 in coupe, or stowage for top.
