If by competes you mean like a Miata competes with a Rossion, then yes. (both great cars, but....)

I'll wait for someone to post their racing/track video with one of these -- price is awesome for HD, if it works.

hm it looks as if the new HD GoPro Camera still suffered from the same rolling shutter effect:

Fastforward to 2:23 in this video :

Here is a good comparison of CCD vs. CMOS.

Think I'll stay with CCD for now.

Well..one more time.

CMOS vs CCD is not that cut and dried. There are some advantages to CMOS and a lot depends on the sensor being chosen and implementation. There are some general things such as low light ability (+CCD), flaring from glare (-CCD), shutter speed issues (-CMOS), ability to handle wide dynamic range in light levels (+CMOS).

CMOS will tend to look "softer" and the colors more muted compared to CCD. I feel this is a bit subjective, some people use the term "filmlike."

I am working with a few different sensors on a new generation product and trust me that CMOS is not a bad choice. There are other variables and a huge part is the actual sensor being used.

Yeah, but the camera's not mounted solidly in the right-hand video, whereas the camera used to record the left-hand video is tightly mounted. Poor comparison.

How are you able to determine that unless you know the individual doing the comparison? I doubt he would not be using a solid mount in both situations since most camcorders provide a standard thread hole.

Here is another example of rolling shutter on a SOLID mount surface using a more expensive CMOS camera Canon HV20 ($1300) -- it's not the mount, it's the CMOS.
Rolling Shutter HV20 test 24p wobbling on Vimeo

Here is the Canon HF100 ($1800) another CMOS.
Canon HF-100 CMOS/OIS on Vimeo

There are algorithms used to "rebuild" the image for CMOS. The problem is the CMOS scans across a frame either vertically or horizontally rather than taking a snapshot at a single point in time. This is not necessarily a bad approach so long as the scan rate is sufficiently fast enough and the resolution is not too high -- but increase the scan rate and resolution is not trivial (read expensive).

Quote:
An important difference between the focal plane shutter and the CMOS sensor shutter is the speed of the curtain. The speed of the curtain for a CMOS sensor is limited by the read speed of the A/D converters and the number of pixels that must be read. Unfortunately, as the resolution goes up, the A/D has more to do for each column (more pixels) and the curtain moves slower. Thus, for 3.3 mega pixel sensors, with 1200 columns and with A/D speeds of 50ns, the transit time for each curtain would be 165ms, quite slow for a hand held camera.
For normally lit images, this might be noticed as an aberration where movement of the camera causes distortion of the image in the form of either a wave or elongation of the object.
So 165ms assuming 24 fps -- you can start to see the problem, 29.97 fps, 30 fps, 60 fps and you can really start to see the problem (hence why the Hero HD drops fps at 1080p). I'm not sure what Randy has up his sleeve, but it'll be interesting finding out.

Rob.

Yeah, that looks better, still can see some rolling shutter but not too bad at all for the price. Audio is great, they did a wonderful job at removing wind noise.

But looks like that footage was not recorded in 1080.

I have to say I am absolutely blown away by the HD Gopro. I was able to hang out at the booth for a bit and speak with my rep while watching some of the new footage they have captured with them in he testing stage. We were watching them on 45 to 50 inch screens and it looked absolutely bad ass. It is pretty amazing for $299.
