Sector 111 New Product Preview: Item #4 = CF Exige Roof

We're close to completing our carbon fiber Exige roof. This roof will feature a large scoop that starts at the windshield header for improved airflow. Additional features include a CF interior, hardware, a screen at the intake of the scoop and factory style gaskets.

Our pictures below are the first prototype in fiberglass. We've photoshopped some color onto it to give you sense of what it can look like when painted. We expect to have our first carbon fiber prototype in 2 weeks. Those of you who have seen our Elise hardtop can vouch for the excellent quality. Let us know what you think about our unique double taper styling for the scoop area.

Final weight is TBD. Price should be around $3k. Production parts should be available in 1-2 months.

Wow, that looks like it should fix the problems with Exige roofs flying off at high speeds..

I am a loyal Sector111 customer and I have to say I like the cup roof better aesthetically. Looks like this one will flow more air though as it seems to sit higher.

We are using the original mounting points on the top but simplifying the hardware.

This one certainly looks bigger but I agree with Chili Red - I prefer the 07 cup's roof. The cup roofs lines flow into the rear "mohawk" better. Especially when viewed from the rear, the taper is to dramatic at the rear roof line.

We didn't want to knock off the cup roof. It would have been easy to do this but we decided to come up with our own design. It looks great in person

I was really looking forward to this top after seeing the pricier one by Composites. However, and I hate to say this, I'm disappointed with the aesthetics. Since your not in production yet, perhaps it's not too late to consider redesigning it.

As a professional (non-automotive) designer, I offer my humble opinions in the hopes of seeing a great looking product at a reasonable price for my own car: the leading edges look too simple--like they were fabricated out of flat stock rather than molded, and the squarish opening doesn't seem to compliment the vivacious curves found elsewhere on our cars. The whole intake tunnel also looks like a separate piece that has been bonded onto the stock hardtop, in other words, the transition joints look too hard rather than a blending like the cup car.

Thanks for the objective opinion. I agree the lines look bonded onto the original hardtop, but I think it will look much better when the product is done and comes out of the mold in one solid piece (all carbon) there won't be any lines like in the photo above. I think this simple change makes it different from the cup roof. Again, we didn't want to copy the cup roof... might as well try something different and IMO not too bad visually. We should have a final piece out of the mold in a week and a half. I am really looking forward to seeing how it looks. We are going to paint ours. Thanks again for the objective opinion... it hasn't gone unheard.

Neil

Are you reducing headroom by having the channel come down into the passenger compartment? If so, the tall guys would prefer that you didn't.

Assuming it doesn't interfere with a helmet, I don't see why it would matter to have the center channel a centimeter lower.

Am I crazy or are there only 2 front screw-down points? I believe the factory roof has 3 with one in the center which will definitely be needed to prevent liftoff

They will not come painted. You definitely want to match the paint to the body color. It will be carbon fiber. You will have the option to get it clear coated or not.

My factory roof doesn't have a third screw-down point in the center. Do the new Cup cars have it?

Such a thing will NOT neccessarily be needed to prevent liftoff. That all depends on a lot of factors, like lifting forces at speed, flexibility of the roof unit in the plane of the leading edge, strength of the outer two screw-down points, etc etc etc. Without doing the engineering I think you're jumping to quite a conclusion!

xtn - take your skirt off and drive faster... mine lifts off all the time. JK. I just realized that I was thinking of the cover and not the actual roof. Please excuse my original post.
