Autocross videos
The fastest of my official timed runs at 31.220. It was the fastest by an S2 Elise and was beaten only by Adrian in his Honda powered S1.
My fastest run overall at a 30.562 in drying conditions.

on the drive home
The upside of putting up with a few drippy days at the WCLM is that you get vistas like this when the clouds lift

Whew... back... sort of (swamped with work and emails and stuff).
Review- Wet. Had a great time. Did a small caravan with rnr and CALtd from the bay area up. Did the Avenue of the Giants, the touristy "drive through a redwood tree" thing. Had a nice dinner at the Samoa Cookhouse outside Eureka, posed the cars in front of a cool Victorian in Eureka and then enjoyed some great roads. I would love to do 199 in the daylight. Nice road. The time trails was interesting on a kart course, but wide enough for the cars, if a little tight in the turns. The day was damp at first and just got wetter. I only went totally agro once. I could not put the power down in the Noble and ran the car in valet mode. Still managed to grab Top Time of Day so that was cool. It was a fun little track. We then headed over to the Seven Feathers Casino where a bunch of Lotus cars were parked in the lot. Registration was painless and the food and drink were good. On Friday we elected to drive out to Crater Lake after a cool lumber sawmill tour, a drive I have done before. But we hit more bad weather. In spite of the rain and cold, it was a nice drive. Kudos to the Seven driver who made the entire drive despite not having side windows and using a tarp lashed to the rollbar for a roof. Friday night we ended with a great bar-b-que and GGLotus co-founder John's house on the river. A perfect location for a Subaru convention (rally roads to get there!). Dinner was awesome and everything was well done. Then back to the hotel for a hot shower and then to dry out and perhaps gamble. Saturday was the autocross. Also mostly wet and rainy. I had fun drifting the car around the cones. Some cars with Toyo RA1 tires were pretty fast, including an S1 Elise that took Top Time of Day (I hit cones). I had the fastest non-Lotus times. The only cars that got raw times in the 29s were the Noble and the S1 Elise.Saturday night we had the banquet. I got a cool shirt from Dietsch Werks. Thanks Rob! Then we went to a cheesy cabaret show at the casino. That was an interesting experience. Sunday the weather finally started clearing up for the concourse and we saw some great looking Lotus cars and had some good Italian food. Then it was off heading south to home. Thanks to the event organizers. Everyone did well in spite of the very English weather. It was good to see some old friends and make some new ones. See you at the next WCLM... somewhere drier.

+1--and that's why I've had mine for more than 35 years
.(But there is a bit of a downside to owning an Elan, even though they are "drivers", each of the cars in the pic arrived by trailer.)

It was a great trip. Also did the Eureka / Avenue of the Giants ( a day earlier). CA-36, was 130 miles of great back road driving. Starting deep in a Redwood forest, mountains, a small valley and foothill. In the entire route came across ~7 vehicles and only 2 in the last half of the run.
Then to Lassen Volcanic National Park for a afternoon of hiking and drove all the way through it the next day to the WCLM. It was a first class event and had a blast. While I don’t really mind the rain of the last two WCLM… look forward to a dry version the next time around. BTW- the S1 has Spoon B18 motor in it. More photos at: WCLM/Trip08 - a set on Flickr |

Nice photo. That yellow Elise really helps to make the shot.
Was fumbling, trying to get my pocket camera out of my backpack. Fished it out too late to get any decent photos. Thanks for sharing... I'll be grabbing a copy as well. |

You my friend have found the holy grail of straights for top speed.... That section of I 5 between Yreka and Weed is it..... I once topped 170 in a Corvette in that section. A little over a year ago I had my Exige at 140+ in that same section. When you hit Louie Road you should be wide open, the road is flat and straight for a long long time.... there is on left turn right after Grenada that can can take at 140+ and then you are straight again until Shamrock lane, slight right then straight again all the way to Yreka.... When you get done with that, turn around at Yreka and head back to Redding through the canyon, Dunsmuir to Lake Shasta City some of the best I-5 driving you will find. Redding to Yreka is 100 miles I did the trip in less than 45 minutes one day in my Exige. It rocked, did not see one CHP the entire trip (left Redding at 7:00 a.m. was at my parents in Yreka by 8:00).

Right about there I did see a CHP and he saw me too. I was very glad he only wrote 85mph on the ticket.

Thanks to everyone who helped put it together! We had a great time and even won a little money at the craps table (one shooter was rolling for well over an hour straight!). My car did great on the long trip out from Colorado, usually getting around 33mpg though I did see one tank at 36mpg. About the only surprise the whole trip, apart from my ability to get so incredibly lost in my home state of Oregon (though the drive along the Columbia Gorge was very scenic!), was the large numbers of highway patrol cars active in Wyoming on the way back. I-80 was NOT a place to speeding that day (I did manage to avoid having to talk to any officers for the entire trip, thanks in no small part to my V1).
Wine tasting proved to be a nice alternative to driving to cloudy vistas on Friday, and we enjoyed some unique Oregon wines and great small wineries. The autocross on Saturday was a blast despite the typical Oregon weather that day. Loved all the other activities too - the sawmill tour, bbq, etc. All in all a great weekend full of great cars and great people! One more thing, I won a windshield wiper from Dietsch Werks as a door prize at the banquet...it's a Bosch wiper, nice aerodynamic profile and very flexible. I had ample opportunity to try it out on this trip and it was GREAT! I definitely recommend this for Elise/Exige owners. I don't recall the model name of the wiper (I installed it the morning after winning it and discarded the packaging) but I'm sure Rob can help you out.

Yea LLOYD!!! I was at the other end of the table from Matt, while Lloyd held the dice through 4 changes of stick. Made up for my losses from Vegas the weekend before. The dice would have been mine next but I did not want to jinx the karma so I colored out.
We had a great time even though we didn't see the Lake. It got a little scary driving down the hill when the brakes went into the infamous ICE mode. Thanks Rob, for bringing is tools and resetting my ABS. I will wager 10:1 that if the next WCLM is held in San Diego in any month but Feb or Mar, there will not be rain on Concourse day. |
