$200K garage

So, the only the thing that sounds unreasonable is that it's not near/attached to the house and has a vallet. Otherwise, why not?

A very cool idea.

I have thought about this being a problem in S.F. Bay Area CA. Where am I going to find a 2-3 BR house with a 6 car garage?

When we first got married, I tried to talk my wife into buying the "3 BR house with attached 30,000 sq. ft. garage/shop" (in the San Bernardino area).

Instead, we ended up with a 900 sq. ft. 3 BR house with a tiny 1 car garage.

Exactly. So, at 3 a.m., I need to get into my other car, drive all the way to the Car Condo just to look at my car?

But I'd gladly work nights their as a valet/security guard.

I found my dream home in Portola Valley when I worked in Silicon Valley. 1 BR 3 Bath, 10 car garage with pit. Roomate/SO said no, so I bought a boat instead.

Son, in my neck of the woods we measure housing lots in acres. A friend of mine just built a stand alone 6 car garage in his backyard and he's only got 3 acres.
It has a downside, he seems to mow the lawn a lot with his John Deere!

I do know what you mean though, I have a sister that lives in SF housing is nuts there.

Not out here. My wife brought home a realty magazine yesterday. I was looking through it and found 3 plots for sale. One of them was advertised as 15,750 sq.ft., and the asking price was $290,000. I just did the conversion; that's about 1/3 of an acre.

Well pops.... around here I had to pay almost a mil. And still have just a 1/4 of an acre :-)

Well... my wife and I bought the 2-acre lot behind our house (on 1-acre) just so... one day... build my dream garage. I'd like about 3000 sq. ft. for the garage. It's a ways off, though. But, at least I've got a place to do it!

I know, I know, I got family living in CA. I'm just busting your chops because I like space. Besides. We have a couple retired greyhounds. It's fun seeing them run at 40mph in the backyard.

I myself love space....

I've got a plot in Costa Rica... and I want to get several acres in the midwest. Maybe in the next 5 years I'll move and retire early :-) ...so I can spend my time doing more valuable things.

Where I live a 1 car garage is worth right about $100k based on comps.

For a few winters here in the Chicago area I rented storage space for my old Lotus Elan from a guy that had a secure, heated, fully stocked workshop (air tools/workbench/lights/etc.) with room for about a dozen cars. IIRC, he owned 2-3 cars, and the rest were people like me who wanted some place nicer for their cars to spend the winter. (My Elan shared the garage with my wife's BMW, which was her all-season car. So, during the winter there was a supply of salty slush delivered to the garage semi-regularly.)

The guy closed the shop a few years ago, but I've thought about seeing what it would take to set up something like that myself - renting a small warehouse in an industrial park, and then renting out space to some of my car buddies. I've mentioned the idea to people before, and there seems to be some interest - just got to get off my butt and do it.

Just need to add a couple of old couches and a beer fridge and we've got a clubhouse!

I've got it pretty good for the Bay Area, but I don't live in SF itself. Two car garage (attached), room for two more in the driveway and ample street parking. And hey, now that we've gotten rid of our housemate, there's even room in the garage for a second car.

Mike,

Bill from the Derby=Q just started the addition to his house so now he will have another 3 car garage on the other side of the house. Since he is an architect, maybe he could give you some ideas of what to build. It might be better to put a second story on it and make it into an guest cottage, room for the inlaws, or rental apartment. There are some loopholes that let you do this without getting your taxes raised up for the full value of the improvement.

Me and my neighbor have some space between our houses which is a walkway between our street and BonIsle and joke that we want to build a garage in between them so that we will have some extra room, but we know the HOA would go nuts if we even mentioned it.

Hey xxx,

Any chance you were down at Dixie Hwy and 10th Ave today? Saw a red Elise down there. I was in my STi.

Well, if you get desperate, I might have some space in my future garage! Of course, you have to leave the keys with me!

Mike
