Another garage hobby..
At 1000 i had a normal garage. at 1900 i was climbing. wow!!
wall is 9' tall, 10' wide one wall, 4' along another and 2' of roof past the top of the walls. i can still park a car in there even. |

You would like my garage!
3 tons of dewired shredded tires for a nice soft landing and LOTS of climbing. Sorry the avi I had can't be posted as it is too large but I copy and pasted a few clips. I used to climb allot with people like Yabo,Skinner,Sharma,Kauk,Hill, shapoopy Schnieder and other valley locals. I miss the good ol' days of a climbing bum.

Is 9 feet really high enough to climb? Admittedly, I know nothing about climbing, but it just seems like you would exhaust all of your climbing possibilities within a few minutes. Maybe I'm totally wrong, but it looks like the construction of the thing was more exercise than you'll ever get using it. Maybe it's for kids? It does look well made though. Too bad you don't have a 20' tall garage.

You should store all your tools on that rock wall. This way when you're working on something and you need a particular tool, you'll have to climb for it. Climbing and working on cars at the same time (not to mention a very efficient use of tool storage space) two great things that go great together.
I myself have aimed for a little bit of Garage-mahal, with a three-part commercial epoxy floor and a 27" Sony XBR TV, Ferrari Rodeo Drive banners from '95 & '97 and Audi Le Mans & BMW F1 trackside flag / banners. I had designs on having one entire wall be a picture of an Audi R8 with a Le Mans tribune in the background (similar to this... http://amoroso.smugmug.com/photos/114236132-L.jpg) but I haven't gotten around to getting a picture that big (billboard?) printed out yet. Anyway, I live in Boulder, CO so there is a certain minimum amount of climbing, cycling, running, etc. that I need to do to maintian resident status in fact, I may be due to hit the rock gym today, that is if I don't opt for skiing I guess. Too bad people around here weren't into cars half as much as they are into other diversions.

Great Job Rowdstar!!! I've got a 12' X 12' shed that I keep saying I'm going to turn into a climbing cave. I just gotta get off my lazy butt. Definitely inspired!!!
Climbing (an probably more appropriately "bouldering") is more than a straight up and down activity. It's like a puzzle, trying to find the best (easiest or hardest, depending on where you are) path to take. It's a great challenge for mind and body. (Geez, I feel like a hippy now.) Would you enjoy a straight drive on the freeway, or do you prefer the little out of the way twisty road? ![]() |

yes, bouldering is the more correct term. as far as the height concern, yes, you do run out in about 6 moves. but you try to make the 6 moves very hard. i start all my problems sitting. you also have the advantage of arranging things however you want to train a specific weakness. and less gear is needed since you just jump down when you are done. and the real advantage is i can train whenever i want and i can attempt the same problem over and over instantly. i like it.

on your t-nuts did you set 2 small anchor srews on the back. this way if the t-nut does come off after sometime you are not left with a useless whole. we did the same thiing when we built Pacific Edge.

If I were to do it again I would just buy a Tuff Shed and then convert it.
I would probably do an inverted staircase.

Our "Y" has a huge room for climbing with all the right padding, harnesses, and instructors. All different levels of difficulty. I've gone a few times... fun.

i started when i lived in oregon. was into it very much before and the beginning of college. helped start the southern oregon climbing club based out of sou in ashland. i have been to smithrock tooo many times and have friends who work for metolius.
set screws on the back of the tnuts??? uhhhh, im screwed then dude. hahaha, after placing 300 of those.... nope, no screw. just pounded into my 3/4" plywood really well. i only lived in the eastbay for a year. only indoor gyms i went to were in fremont and livermore. bouldered outdoors a few places. i was moore into chasing tail and motorcycles when i lived there. |

Did metalhead paulson still work there at metolious? I use to party with franklin, paulson, darius, and metalhead. man I am having major flashbacks. chasing tail and motorcycles great combo! just be careful putting on the holds and don't force the bolt. this is getting me psyched. I gotta get my ass going and start climbing again. its been back burnered for way too long. if you ever want a tour of Castle Rock let me know. -mark
