lint makes a noob post.
(Scene: a reasonably public place, such as a coffeehouse or park. Several individuals are present, engaged in location-appropriate activities, such as drinking lattes or playing frisbee. Enter a mysterious stranger, downstage left.)
lint: Hi, I'm lint. Innocent Bystander #1: And why should I care? lint: I drive a Lotus! IB1: Big whoop. So do I. Innocent Bystander 2: Hey! Be nice! Everyone's the new kid on the block at some point. IB1: Yeah, yeah, whatever. Gimme a call when you got something interesting to say. IB2: Sounds like someone rolled off the wrong side of the log today! So, lint, what do you drive? lint: It's an '05 Elise, BRP/biscuit, with a silver stripe. It's one of the HRM cars, so it's got a few goodies added on. IB1: Hey, I've seen that car! lint: Really? IB1: Dirty as heck. You should wash it more often. lint: ...Yeah. I know. I've been driving... IB1: Like my grandma! You got passed by a Camry! IB2: Play nice, kids. IB1: You got passed by a PRIUS! lint: Hey, there's some bad traffic in San Diego! I try to take the Neon when I know I'm going to be sitting on the freeway for a couple hours, but the Lotus has actually been the more reliable car over the past seven months. Innocent Bystander 3: That's crazy talk! lint: But it's true! When I got the car, I promised myself I'd learn to do basic maintenance, and that's all it's needed. But I know that anything more than an oil change or checking the tire pressure and I'm somewhat over my head. IB3: You got a Lotus and you don't know how to rebuild an engine upside down and blindfolded? Hoo boy, you're gonna be crying in your Rice Krispies! Don't you know what Lotus stands for? lint: Yeah, I've heard that one before. Hopefully I'll make some new friends who can help me learn. IB2: That sounds like a good plan. Hey, what do you do where you get stuck in traffic all the time? lint: I'm a professional ballet dancer, and I grow orchids for a living. Sometimes I have rehearsals in the evening... Not-so-innocent Bystander 4: PUT YOUR LEG OVER YOUR HEAD!!!! lint: ...Not in these pants. NIB4: DO IT NOW!!! lint: Oh dear, this is like that one strange guy on the trolley who asked if I had ever done exotic dancing... IB2: Don't worry, we've all been in uncomfortable situations like that. lint: Really? IB2: Well... Not exactly like that, but...you know... lint: Riiiight. I think I've embarrassed myself enough for now. Have a pleasant evening! IB1: I'm embarrassed to be part of this conversation. Try to do better next time. (exeunt alles) ************* I had some vintage 2-buck-chuck with dinner tonight. I blame that. Hello all!

Welcome to the board and to the madness.
Interesting greeting. Just taking a stab here.....but I'm guessing you're in California? Maybe trying to be or are a writer/director/producer/actor?? Either that or you hear strange voices in your head. j/kEnjoy your stay

Thank you all for the welcome! I've been registered on here for a while, but never really introduced myself. I was trying to be witty and truthful at the same time, but I guess it kind of came across as weird.
I live in the North County area of San Diego (yup, California), and I actually am a ballet dancer with a local company. I'm also one of the current owners of the family business, which is an orchid nursery; I do all the hybridizing, the lab work (since all the seed germination and mericloning is done in vitro), and show design, among other things. My DD is a '99 Neon. I drive it when I know I'm going to be sitting in traffic, or when I've got a show downtown and I have to park on the street. It's starting to show its age; the AC doesn't work, and it leaks (or it did until I caulked the sunroof shut. Would have cost more than the car was worth to fix it). My Lotus doesn't leak. The AC works. It makes me grin. A lot. I'm grinning as I'm typing this. There's a huge, long story as to how and why I got the car, but in my mind, it all boils down to how it feels to drive. The precision, the sensitivity...it's the exact same sensation as a really good day in the studio, or on stage, when everything physically just makes sense. I wanted a car to drive for the sake of driving, not just to get from place to place, and I'm so very, very glad I found it. That being said, I didn't grow up working on cars. I know my way around minor home repair and am no stranger to working with my hands, but all I've got is one semester of auto shop to my credit. I'm mechanically inclined, but not experienced. I tend to drive conservatively on public roadways. However, I have tried out the second cam. Y'know, just to make sure it worked. ![]() My car is pretty dirty right now, since I'm too much of a wuss to get all wet washing it when it's fifty degrees out. And this random guy on the trolley really did ask if I did exotic dance as well as ballet. It's funny to watch people's reactions when you turn questions like that back on them. -lint, who's hoping this doesn't double post. |

So if a guy asked you if you do exotic dancing...and you do ballet....does... that mean... you're a girl?!

but... wait..... does that mean there are women out there as crazy as me (well maybe not quite as crazy) who like loud, lightweight, impractical sports cars?!?! I feel like my whole world has been turned upside down. Everything I thought I knew was a lie.

Sorry it's taken me so long to reply...I don't necessarily have the time to log on here everyday, and things have been crazy this week. (Although if any SD people are in Balboa Park this week, there's a free orchid show in Casa del Prado. I named a plant after my car...how crazy is that?)
Yeah, I'm a girl. I was probably the only person in my ballet class growing up who had a sportscar calendar on the wall. It was right next to the giant kitten poster. ![]() I've been up to Cars & Coffee at Carlsbad a couple times, but I mainly just lurk and peoplewatch. Winter and spring are busy seasons for both my jobs, and my car is super dirty. About orchid hybridizing...it's basically doing the nasty to flowers with a toothpick. From a commercial grower's standpoint, the traits we look to breed for are growth/flowering habit, color and shape of flowers, and other interesting characteristics (i.e., attractive flower mutations, patterning, or tolerance to hard water). It's a very imperfect science, especially since it can take 5-7 years to see the results of an experiment, with the types of plants we grow. Thanks for the welcome! |

Very interesting greeting post. Dripping with hints of the theater. Welcome. Please post pics of both you and the car! One of us had to say it.
