I agree that it is very difficult to to judge driving talent in F1. I certainly don't know enough about what goes on behind the scene to pick the best driver. I like am a fan of: Barrichello, Hamilton, Alonso & Kubica. I would like to see all of them become world champions or repeat.

I have to go with Fernando. While he might not be the best at any single thing, he's not only a great driver but a fantastic racer. His situational awareness is outstanding and perhaps second to none. Just look at San Marino in 2005 to see what was -- whilst underrated in some ways -- perhaps one of the greatest drives of all time.

presently, i think Alonso is the best all around driver. the way he is able to drive that Renault and place it where it shouldn't be is pure talent. he's a double world champion and has sucked up all the pressure from MSC. i think he is really good.
i feel Vettel is blistering fast. Same with current champion Hamilton. But Vettel still needs to be proven long term while i'd like to see Hamilton deal with an inferior car. |

My 2 cents:
Jenson Button - A very very fast driver... Some of his qualy laps in borderline cars were simply stunning. The problem is that he's never had that killer instinct to make the do-or-die moves that mark out most world champions. So his race pace ultimately suffers - this year he was fortunate to have a car at the start of the year head and shoulders above the rest and he did good work to capitalise on it. But now everyone else is fairly similar he's back to struggling in race conditions. I like Button and he does deserve the championship (after all they all need some luck) but I think he will struggle next year. Rubens Barrichello - I like Rubens and would have been interested to see what he could have done without playing second fiddle to Schumacher. Ultimately I doubt we'll ever know as he's probably not long for F1 anymore. Sebastian Vettel - damn fast and good driver. Good racer too but needs more experience. All the greats take risks but he seems to end up worse off more than most. However I have no doubt that he will be world champion at some point. Mark Webber - get through the whinging and moaning he's a good F1 driver. Just a little inconsistent for my liking. Kimi Raikonnen - where do we start? when he can be bothered he is amazingly fast. As a F1 driver he must bug the crap out of ferrari as he oftern pulls out fastest laps right at the end when it's too late out of the points. He has the raw speed and is a proper racer just I don't think he gells well with the ferrari team. Lewis Hamilton - Ok, after the Turkey GP2 race before coming to Mclaren I have a soft spot for him. He's not the fastest and may not be the best all round driver but jeez can the guy race. In GP2 going from basically last to 2nd with all the cars identical means it's just the driver being the difference. Unfortunately this year he just had no confidence in the car and it's masked what he can achieve. Look at last year with some of the overtaking moves he attempted - it's as if he wants to win and there's a lot of drviers who don't have that. Fernando Alonso - It's a shame that he throws his toys out of his pram so much as he is a stunning driver. Like Hamilton he can overtake in places traditionaly not deemed as viable locations for a move. It's just I can't stand this "I want better stuff than my teamate" etc... WIll be interesting to see how it works at ferrari as I just can't see them making Massa number 2 after everything he's been through. Would be a PR disaster for Ferrari... Felipe Massa - Great driver and oh so close... Needs to get better in the wet as he didn't have the same kind of confidence as Hamilton or Kimi. Also this years car like Mclarens was no better than a prawn sandwich so again it's covered up what he's capable of. I do hope he is able to race 100% after the accident. |
