If a breakaway Formula series forms, which will you watch?

I'm going to try and remain as unbiased here as possible, which means I'll say no more, other than that I'm furious right now. Probably too much said.

Just like CART/IRL, I intend to punish both and watch neither. There is enough blame in this situation to go around. Nobody should be let off the hook. After sitting though the 6 car USGP, I pretty much lost interest anyway.

I agree with the post about losing interest after the USnonGP. I have continued to follow F1 only as a soap opera of ego, greed and mismanagement. When looked at from that perspective, it remains amusing, if not particullarly enthralling. I'll probably check out races in both series, just to see which group is making the biggest fools of themselves. It would be good to see the Lotus logo on track one more time, even if in a lame format. One thing is certain. No more time or money wasted attending "races."...Dave

Yes, it's which one will we keep watching?
But talk about fun, this is going to look like a vindictive divorce. Don't let the kids see it, could be obscene.

One of the only entertaining aspects of F1 coverage is the announcing. Matchett, Hobbs, and Varsha really are an incredible team. I'm sure SpeedChannel has a contract with Bernie the Gnome and won't be able to televise the new series. The major networks have shied away from open wheel racing coverage as ratings are traditionally poor. I wouldn't pay ten cents to watch the breakaway series on pay-per-view. They'll probably end up with loseres like Derek Daley as their color announcers (remember his stellar performances on the CBS broadcast F1 races?). It'll be really interesting to see how the new series arranges coverage...Dave

I'll watch FOTA for the racing, and FIA F1 for the amusement value.

Even though I think the split is lame and the players involved are all egomaniacs, I actually think FOTA is in a far better position than the FIA

Aside from having all the cars that anybody cares about (ex Williams), thanks to Bernie's greed they now have a huge list of world class venues to chose from for races. Montreal, Silverstone, Paul Richard, Indianapolis, and Hockenhiem are all free today and the current F1 doesn't have a long-term lock on Monaco, Spa, or Monza. That is a huge advantage in terms of drawing interest. Throw in Imola along with a few others, and you have a solid calendar.

+1 Not to mention any number of great US venues...

The contract for coverage tended to be year to year. Remember how it came down to the last minute before Speed knew if the could cover the races a few years ago?

The FOTA gang are sure to bring racing back to North America.

I look forward to having Canada back as well as 1 or 2 races in the US.

If FOTA doesn't screw it up they have a teriffic opportunity.

That is assuming they have time to work it all out and make all the court appearances forced by Max and Bernie.

F1 will now be held with laughable cars and unknown drivers on tracks located in places nobody wants to go.

Sounds like Max has been spending too much time getting his ass kicked by the Nazi Hookers. He’s beginning to act like one.

The fact is, a split program, as has been proven conclusively in the US (Champ/ IRL) DOES NOT SERVE THE SPORT. everyone on this forum should vow, and spread the word (make it go viral), to boycott (refuse to watch) ANY version of Formula 1, thereby forcing these egomaniacs to sit down and work out their petty BS issues. No viewership = no $/ exposure.

I will watch the US teams for sure....especially because it seems that there will be US races...as in Las Vegas.

Danica Patrick is one of the US drivers..(from what I read). So, US teams, female driver...us tracks. I am sure the new series will have no issues finding fans.

I think we all knew that the MS years were something truly special...

How about we don't do that... The fact is the FIA lost touch with reality a long time ago, a revolution was needed and we finally have it so lets support FOTA and move on and let the FIA die the quick death it deserves.

See you in Montreal next year!

NFW

Imagine you are a racing team owner spending Millions and Millions of dollars to develop the sport. Now - imagine Max telling you to fire 75% of your staff, work with a budget which favors upstart teams, and more and more. WHAT would you do.

I did stop watching CART / IRL after the split. I was angry with Tony Geroge and still am. I will NEVER go to Indy.

This is a very different thing for many resons.

Sorry for the rant

Wherever Sebastian Vettel is going to race: I will watch that series.

But, seriously: Alan's question is nearly impossible to answer and I am not speaking about technical matters like which TV channel will broadcast what series. Both Ecclestone and Mosley are almost history, although both have proved amazing staying power. Ecclestone at the age of 78 after serious medical problems and Mosley after the public had become aware of his crude sexual preferences.

We do not know yet for sure whether there will be 2 series as of 2010, but even if this will happen, I am sure they will merge sooner or later. Money will decide and that is on the manufacturers (i.e. the sponsors) side.

I have grown tired of Bernie's threats of gold medals and his abandonment of some great traditional venues. But is it really possible for FOTA to split from the FIA and become the premier racing series on the planet?

To become the top series they need the FIA points history (that Bernie was willing to dispose of), and Max will never give that up. FOTA just can't start over, there has to be some continuity between the existing record of driver/constructor points and whatever comes later. There is way too much history at stake here!

I see no positive outcome from a split.

I echo the previous poster who blasted Tony George. I have never forgiven that AH.

jim, i heard while watching the practice on friday that monaco said if there is no ferrari, there will be no monaco.

I am not a big ferrari fan, but right now i love them.
there negotiating techniques of max were said to be," give us an unconditional contract for next season, and THEN we will negotiate"
to me i think the teams>greater than the governing body.

I will watch both, only because i like watching open wheel racing.
anyone know why williams and force india defected from the FOTA teams.
it would have been great if there was %100 unity.

i dont think the FOTA teams are the egomaniacs.
it sounds like they have just simply had enough of the 1 egomaniac who is driving them away.
seems like its been a long time coming.
I support the actions of the FOTA teams, though i wish it didnt come to this.
sometimes enough is enough.
