Mobile F1 tracking application launched

Mobile F1 tracking application launched
15 June 2009

A brand-new timing and positioning application has been launched for Formula One fans who own an Apple iPhone or iPod touch. The programme, developed by Soft Pauer Ltd, will allow petrolheads to keep track of both the current classification and timing of F1 sessions as well as the live locations of each car on the circuit.

In a similar way to Kangaroo TV, which allows fans present at the venue to keep track of Formula One Management's various television feeds whilst being offered with a choice of worldwide commentaries, Apple's new application will allow users to view dynamic maps of the circuits, including a bird's eye view, whilst following all of the action in real time. "We're very pleased to offer fans an added dimension to the experience of watching Grands Prix," said Otmar Szafnauer, CEO of Soft Pauer. "We hope that they will take advantage of this new opportunity to get a full picture of the racing action wherever they go."

For the first time ever, the general public will now be able to view live track maps, seen previously only by team engineers via systems on the pit wall, away from the circuit and with the option of narrowing selections down to certain drivers' progress. "I'm very excited by this application as it will allow fans to keep in touch with what is going on whilst on the move," added F1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone, head of Formula One Management (FOM).

bah - in the uk it's 5GBP for one race or 20GBP for the rest of the season. So figure about $7.5 - $30.
