SCCA SPEED World Challenge

So check out (set the DVR!) the Long Beach Grand Prix race that is being broadcast by SPEED this Friday. Volvo puts a a car on pole with Randy Pobst and Andy Pilgrim was 3rd.... but the Volvos' had trouble in the hot thick air.

Local James Safronas from GMG did well, after a rough couple of days leading up to the race suffering two crashed Porsches from other GMG drivers. Dino Crescentini totaled his Porsche at high speed and William Zeigler also crashing his Porsche.

Notable is the drive from Craig Stanton (noted Lotus driver) in the Porsche GT3, a separate series in the World Challenge GT race. Craig ended up beating many of the much more powerful GT cars.

Dino's in car during practice.

Note loss of brake line at 4:53 into the video.

Dino suffered some minor injuries.

I was told he was doing over 150mph.... he did not scrub off a lot of speed but had the smarts to toss the car sideways. The roll cage was bent in quite a bit into the driver's seat area.

Wow. When you told me the time and what happened i knew it was coming up after the long straight and high top speed.

That was brutal.

I have the original video. It is a lot more disturbing as Dino stays in the car for some minutes as the corner workers rush about doing stuff, and Dino makes a lot of noise from the pain. I promised to not show that video to anyone.

OMG! I can't image what it would be like to be going 150mph and realize you have no brakes or track left. Glad to hear he only had minor injuries.

I thought it you were supposed to let go of the wheel before impact to save our thumbs. Is that a urban myth?

Most definately not a myth. Just have to let go as late as possible, kinda like personal chicken, to maximize scrubing speed and attempting to set direction of impact (angled seems best). Unfortunately I've had to use this technique. I think it saved me from injury.
