McLaren LM5 Concept – design study by Matt Williams
October 16th, 2009

Matt Williams is a recent graduate of Coventry University’s Transportation Design degree program. The LM5 Concept was produced as his final year project.

This exotic school project is designed as a successor to the legendary McLaren F1.

Even though McLaren has recently revealed an all-new MP4-12C, it is not a successor to the legendary F1, which some people think it is. McLaren Automotive has confirmed it that they are working on the successor to the iconic car, which is expected in the next couple of years.

Matt William’s LM5 Concept is something that the folks at McLaren should take a look at.

LM5 Concept features the same three-seat layout with a central drivers seat as the F1. All three seats feature racing-style four-point harnesses. The multifunction steering wheel features a central display for the tachometer.

In designer’s vision power could come from a mid-mounted 5.0-liter V10 sourced from BMW. We doubt that McLaren will use a BMW engine this time(Original F1 had a BMW sourced V12). More likely they will use their in-house developed twin-turbo V8.

This year’s Tokyo Motor Show was all about domestic automakers, with just Lotus and Alpina coming from Europe.

U.S. automakers took a break and are getting ready for Los Angeles Auto Show, coming up fast starting December 6, with a special preview night. I'll be there visiting the Lotus Booth with my son, Charlie.

First Korean supercar named Spirra coming to Europe
October 26th, 2009

Han-Chul Kim is the man behind first South Korean supercar, the Spirra.

Hand-built by Oullim Motors it features a modified mid-positioned Hyundai V8 that packs 500 horsepower, which is good enough to hit 60 mph in 3.7 seconds.

It's a hand-built supercar that costs around $100,000.

Hennessey’s 2010 HPE700 LS9 Camaro will also get 800 hp and 1000 hp versions
October 30th, 2009

Next week Hennessey will show their LS9 powered HPE700 Camaro at the SEMA Show in Las Vegas. HPE700 is powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that produces up to 725 horsepower and 741 lb-ft of torque.

0-60 mph comes in just 3.5 seconds and it is priced from $119,500.

If 725 horsepower is not enough Hennessey has also two twin-turbo upgrades available. The first one(HPE800) packs 800 horsepower and 715 lb-ft of torque, while the second one(HPE1000) packs an amazing 1000 horsepower and up to 900 lb-ft of torque.

Lotus Elise Club Racer – retro colors from the 60s, new interior

In case you missed it, here is the special edition Elise Club Racer, based on the 134 hp Lotus Elise S.

It is available in four retro colors used by Lotus in the 1960s(Elite Yellow, Carbon Grey, Sky Blue and Old English White).

The exterior body color theme is carried over to the interior, and can be see on the seats and transmission tunnel where it is combined with silver and black paint highlights.

Other unique features are the anthracite anodized gear knob and handbrake sleeve, the Club Racer (CR) logo hand embroidered on the seat headrest and the unique anodized aluminium flooring in the driver’s and passenger’s footwell.

Rendered speculation: Porsche Supercar Concept

The Porsche Carrera GT was produced between 2004-2006, a total of 1,270 cars were made and there are many speculations circulating that Porsche is working on its successor to take on other high-end supercars.

Porsche of course has not confirmed any of the speculations.

Thankfully there are talented artists like Emil Baddal who can feed our imagination and lust for new supercars.

This imaginary Veyron fighter features an aggressive front end with Panamera style headlights, huge side scoops, LEDs, fixed rear wing and panoramic roof.

Ultima claims they have beaten Top Gear lap record

The current official Top Gear test track record is 1 minute and 10.7 seconds in a £1 million track-only Ferrari FXX, which was driven by Michael Schumacher disguised as The Stig.

British sports car manufacturer Ultima claims they have beaten that time.

Ultima GTR720 reportedly lapped the Top Gear test track(also known as the Dunsfold aerodrome circuit) in 1 minute and 9.9 seconds. So why did not Top Gear feature this car?

According to Ultima spokesman Top Gear had ignored their repeated requests to feature its cars in the show, so they decided to book the track for a private test session. No word on why Top Gear did not want to feature a 720 horsepower British made sports car.

Even though GTR720 was optimised for the track, the spokesman said it was still fully road-legal unlike the million pound track only Ferrari FXX. That means you can drive it to McDonalds.

HAMANN Volcano Red & Yellow, based on SLR McLaren

Hamann introduced the Mercedes SLR McLaren based Volcano (in white) last fall. Now this German tuner is showing us the Volcano in two new colors: Red and Yellow.

Power on the 5.4 liter V8 is output is increased from 626 hp to 700 hp. Maximum torque is 830 Nm and 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) comes in 3.6 seconds while the top speed is 348 km/h (216 mph).

Aerodynamics are improved thanks to carbon fiber front- and rear wing extensions and also new side skirt attachments and sheathings.

Interior upgrades include aluminum pedals, foot-rests, door sills, head rests and floormats with the Hamann logo. Leather parts are finished with the high-quality Alcantara leather.

Gumpert Apollo Sport sets a new Nürburgring lap record.

The Gumpert Apollo sport is a car for a real purists driver. Power comes from an Audi sourced 4.2-liter twin-turbo V8 that packs 700 horsepower. It weighs just 1200 kg (2645 lbs).

0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) comes in just 3.0 seconds and top speed is 360 km/h ( 224 mph).

Here, it sets a new lap record for road legal cars on the legendary 13 mile Nurburgring Nordschleife. It was driven by a 27 year old race driver Florian Gruber and the new Ring record is 7:11,57.

With an average speed of around 106.78 mp/h the Apollo was by 3.32 seconds faster than the former record holder(Donkervoort D8 RS06). And – by the way – more than 13 seconds faster than the Maserati MC 12 in 2008.

”Well – I even could have gone a little faster”, said the pretty unimpressed driver after coming back into the pits. And not even one drop of sweat on his brow after the record lap.

“The conditions were good, but not perfect – so we have still got potential to go faster”, concluded Florian Gruber.

From his point of view, the Apollo has the potential to even break the 7 minutes mark.

Roland Gumpert, former head of AUDI SPORT and managing director of the GUMPERT Sportwagenmanufaktur, adds with a wink: “It is great that we broke the record and that we were able to show the potential of the Apollo – but at this stage there is no need to go faster. We don´t want to demoralize our fellow competitors right now…”

One-of-a-kind hand-painted G37 Coupe inspired by Cirque du Soleil commemorates Infiniti’s 20th Anniversary.

Infiniti G37 Anniversary Art Project VehicleLast week Infiniti Canada revealed the Infiniti G37 Anniversary Art Project Vehicle at the 14th Annual Canadian Art Gallery Hop Gala in Toronto.

G37 Sport Coupe was painted by Montreal artist Heidi Taillefer to celebrate Infiniti’s 20th anniversary.

“Celebrating 20 years of Infiniti is an important milestone and we wanted to do something truly unique and representative of the Infiniti brand to commemorate this occasion,” said Wendy Durward, Director of Infiniti Canada. “The intricate, beautiful design is an expression of Infiniti’s commitment to Inspired Performance in everything we do.”

Infiniti’s partner and inspiration for the G37 Coupe Anniversary design concept, Cirque du Soleil, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year and was also present at the unveiling.

It took Heidi much of August and early September to hand paint the vehicle. No structural changes were done to the car and it is just as good to drive as all other G37 Coupes, except this one is like a painting on wheels.

The Anniversary Vehicle will be on tour at various Cirque du Soleil shows and other events over the coming months and will later eventually be auctioned off for charity.

Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita – limited to just three cars!

Koenigsegg CCXR Trevita1018 hp Koenigsegg CCXR is one of the rarest and fastest supercars in the world. Top speed is 250+ mph (400+ km/h). 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) comes in just 3.1 seconds.

This year Koenigsegg will deliver 10 CCXR’s and all or already spoken for.

Now there is a special edition model called CCXR Trevita. Production will be limited to just three cars making it one of the rarest versions in the Koenigsegg family cars. Trevita is an abbreviation in Swedish and translates into – three whites.

By utilizing a new and unique method, Koenigsegg has managed to coat fibers with a diamond finish. Result is called Koenigsegg Proprietary Diamond Weave. The process was fully developed at Koenigsegg headquarters in Ängelholm Sweden, where the fiber treatment is conducted carefully in small quantities, prior to further processing the prepreg material.

When sunlight hits the car, it sparkles like millions of silvery white diamonds infused inside the visible carbon fiber weave bodywork.

All three cars are fully equipped with Koenigsegg Shimmering Diamond Weave bodywork, double carbon wing, paddle-shift, inconell exhaust system, carbon ceramic brakes with ABS, hydraulic lifting system, infotainment system, tire monitoring system, chrono instrument cluster and airbags.

So how much does it cost? We asked Koenigsegg and the price is 1,500,000 Euros ($2,200,000) plus all the taxes and delivery charges.

For comparison regular CCXR price starts at 870,000 Euros ($1,200,000).
