Mac computer Qs.. help!

i'm trying to upload some photos from my computer to our forum to share and have some difficulties:

It says: 'Invalid file extension' !!

Here is what I did:
1. First I imported pics from camera to my Mac machine, then dragged the folder w/photos in it to iphoto. I can see photos..

2. 'Export' selected photos from iphoto to a new folder on desktop -During this export I changed photos from original(RAW) to JPG and resized them to smaller size (100 kb and 500kb). [I still can open and see these reseized photos in my computer]

3. I opened interested thread and click on 'managed attachement' etc... but when I clicked upload it says: 'Invalid file extension'

Anyone can Help plz?

What's the extension of the file?

In an effort at full disclosure, I know little about apple computers in comparison to PCs and hate them with a bitter, unrelenting passion.

the extension of the file is bunch of number and letters, but the type of file is JPG.

The extension of the file isn't same as the Type of file??

Have you tried renaming the extension to .jpg? Many web apps won't recognize the file type without the corresponding extension.

No I did not. The computer gave them an extension of its own when I 'export'ed them to the desktop.

^^^^^^^^^^ Try that, but first, like others have said, you can try single clicking on the file name, and changing the extension to .jpg.

How did you change them from RAW? Have you done it before?
Usually RAW files need to go through some processing software, I don't use iPhoto so don't know if it has the ability to properly convert the files

Your first mistake is using iPhoto. I friggin hate iPhoto...

Do you have any other photo software on your computer? I am assuming you do if you are shooting in RAW, if not, why are you shooting in RAW? Seems a little overkill if you don't have more powerfull photo software...

Anywho... find the folder that holds the images and open them in something like Photoshop to do your photo manipulation.

I've never had this issue with iPhoto before either. However, being an old Mac guy, in my Finder preferences, I have turned on "show all file extensions." Apples default is to turn this off.

In iPhoto, when you go to export a photo and select "jpeg" from the dropdown menu, there is also a button to have it append the file name with the proper extension. make sure this is selected.

How you got a series of letters and numbers is a mystery. I've never had that happen on a Mac or a PC.

You would need either Photoshop Adobe RAW software (PS Elements might have it too), the Nikon Capture software, or something similar to convert the photos, you can't just change the extension

Yes, you can do a batch conversion, but the main reason to use RAW files is because it gives you a lot of flexibility for adjusting the photos, so many do one at a time since you can customize the images.

Do you have photoshop? If so which version?

If not, did your camera come with any software?

It appears that iPhoto can work with some RAW files

Quote:
If your camera has a RAW setting, taking photos in RAW format lets you save every bit of photographic detail as part of the actual photo file. iPhoto imports RAW-format photos just like any other photo, organizes them right next to the rest of your shots, and lets you edit them using advanced editing tools designed to give RAW photographers all the options they need to create the perfect image.

To see a list of RAW-format cameras that are compatible with iPhoto, visit the iPhoto website.

Compatible RAW-format cameras ►
When you edit a RAW-format photo in the main iPhoto window, the RAW badge appears at the bottom of the window.

When you click Done, your editing changes are applied to the RAW image data and stored as a JPEG file (the original RAW file remains unchanged). You can save edits to a RAW photo as a TIFF file or choose to send unedited RAW files to an external editor. See Related Topics below.

A RAW file is a reference or “digital negative” format, not a working format. For example, you can’t print directly from a RAW file. Also, other programs, such as iMovie, do not interpret RAW files.

iPhoto simplifies the RAW workflow by combining RAW editing and JPEG conversion into one step. If you use an expert program like Adobe Photoshop, you have to make your adjustments to the RAW photo, then use a separate process to convert all your photos to a working format, such as JPEG or TIFF. iPhoto simplifies all that.
Try looking in the help function (where I found the above), you may have missed a step, it will probably be easier for you to do it through iPhoto.
I don't usually batch my photos as I apply individual adjustments to each one, so I don't think I could guide you through the process over the internets

Yes. I have not done it, but it is a batch procedure. Those geniuses at the NikonCafe will surely be able to help with that too. (I now see Mopho has beat me to it)

Mopho,
Since he can SEE the photos on his computer, My bet is that he has loaded the Nikon plug-in for RAW images... just a guess.

Climb4Fun,
Mopho is right, your camera should have come with some software that will help you process Nikon RAW images.

Seriously, go to NikonCafe and these guys will help you step by step.
