As a couple of people already mentioned, there's only one way to get tires mounted. Here are the detailed instructions:
![]()
That applies to any car. I wouldn't dream of letting a random tire place work on my Elise. And even less leaving my car there unsupervised. Sorry to hear that this happened. It hurts to see your nice car like this. But you were taking a big risk. I could tell you a few stories... and they include a Lotus dealership.

Coping strategy for when the smoke clears? I say buy a lightly used (or leftover) 06 Exige at a discount, or if you're willing to shell out the extra $$$ an Exige S.
It's about the only car that could get me out of mine. (But you can never tell with the little "ripples" of well known aftermarket folks coming out with FI and what not for the Elise... e.g. Jackson Racing... *wow*). |

I'd be nervous about using C without removing the panel, though. From what I recall, it was really hard to hit the C points because the crossmember you're aiming for is very thin and there are protrusions nearby that get in the way. When my father and I tried it on his lift, we initially had the arms a cm or two too far forward and it was clear that that the gas tank body panel was taking some of the weight instead of the structural piece hidden above it. We were able to make some adjustments to the arm position with the car in the air (using some really tall jack stands designed for this purpose) and finally got it solidly in place. Doing the lift procedure myself and seeing what's involved has made me that much more wary of who I'll let work on the car. |

That car is a write off - the chassis tub is punctured - as such the main structure is in need of replacement - do not accept anything other than a total pay out for your loss and expenses.
I run my own body shop and as such would recommend this as an insurance loss if it came to me - other than the puncture in the tub it would repair OK. |

Ouch!
![]() What was the mechanic thinking? He's pulled a wheel off and must have felt the balance changing. It's no problem to lift an Elise on such a hoist as long as you attach a weight to the front suspension and constantly monitor the balance. As for the damage.. It don't think it's that bad.. You will definately need a new rearclam and diffuser (not sure about the undertray). The frontclam might be repairable or needs to be replaced. The stress on the chassis is no isssue. The glue used for the chassis is very rigid. It will either snap loose or will stay foot. In this case, I don't think the chassis is either bent or structurally damaged. The puncture in the floor is purely aesthetic. (unfortunately) I assume Lotus will propose to bond another ali panel onto the punctured area. The only thing that needs to be checked is the rear subframe. As this is made of cheese compared to the Elise S1 and Rover engined Elise S2, this might have been damaged. But.. replacable. At the end, the only thing which will remain is the puncture in the floor, that will need good care, the rest is perfectly repairable.

I edited Jib222's post and removed the virus link. I doubt he meant to do that.

Sure it's repairable. One could circle drill out the hole in the floor to remove the affected area and relieve any stress risers and then bond/rivet round cover plates over/under the hole. It would be as good as new, functionally speaking.
Just because Lotus says "damage not repairable" doesn't mean that's true for any and all conditions. It mostly applies to the extrusions and/or suspension pickup points. A little common sense will tell you that the floor sheets can be treated like an airplane's wing skin. That being said... I'm sure the hole isn't the only problem, and I sure would fight for a replacement, not repair, using that hole and the language in the manual as leverage if necessary. xtn

Goodyear/Firestone shops? Don't bother. Ever.
They have no idea what they are doing and have been featured in numerous news investigations for ripping off customers.
