If it's USAA, I've actually had success in getting some of my stuff off totalled vehicles before they take it away.

Im with geico and I will inquire about the parts for you. Being on almost the other side of the world isnt making this proccess easier but so far the adjuster and the company has been doing a good job of keeping me informed so when/if I know about grabbing some parts I will let you know.

Anyone know if it is common practice for the insurance company to auction off your car before they have settled with you?

Salvage LOTUS ELISE for sale 2005 CONVERTIBLE 1.8 Gasoline RWD Honolulu HI - used, wrecked repairable vehicle id 835162256 | VehBidz

I honestly have never had a car totaled but seeing it for sale while im still making payments on it and have no final settlement kinda made me mad.

Any insight would be appreciated.

That is illegal. You still own the car. Tell them to cease and stop trying to sell it. You still own the car until you sign a settlement agreement. Technically that is theft and fraud.

make sure you take a screenshot of the ad before you tell them to stop listing it for sale. It is totally illegal for them to do that before you settle with them.

DCampbell,
Gotta love the sense of community here.
I note the auction listing is "future sell".
It looks like they are trying to elicit interest prior to the actual auction date.
This will allow them to move quickly once they have closed the insurance deal with the owner.

Appreciate the info. Like I said im new to this. I have never had a car totaled and im literally a world away which make this all the more difficult to work with.

Sorry to hear about your car...I haven't seen any Lotuses on any of the bases here in England. You would have been the first! I am at RAF Lakenheath, been here for over a year. At least you can go on a Lotus factory tour while your stationed here and drool over some of the cars there!
