Glad she's OK!
I agree with dma550 - gotta love a woman with some fire in her soul. (And ones that can actually drive a manual transmission!)

That said, even though my girlfriend is an extreme-sports type of girl, she doesn't drive my Lotus for the following reasons:
If she's singing along to the radio, she likely won't see the stop sign, traffic light, or cop. Any bets on hitting potholes or driveway curbs in the Lotus?
She's written-off at least 3 cars. She short-shifts her Civic and her normal driving mode is "granny", yet she took my 16 year old turbo Talon to work one day and later admitted she hit 225km/h (~140mph). Even though I gave her the "how to treat a turbo" lesson, she pretty much tore down the street when it was cold. Probably turned it off red hot, too. Let's not even talk about the logic in driving an old car with 290,000km on it that fast.
Yep, disqualified from the Lotus.

Man, I'm just trying to comprehend the emotional response to finding out your wife just totaled your Lotus.

I'm imagining this weird mix of anger, frustration, concern, and sadness.

NO! Take her to some autocrosses and give her an HPDE course so she will be skilled and unlikely to duplicate her mistake. If she doesn't want to drive another Lotus (or similar car) at least she can be prepared in the event of an emergency to take care of herself and those close by.

I agree

OP, your wife got seriously lucky to walk out of that without a scratch (major scratch).

If i was you i wouldn't be mad at her yet...wait a couple of weeks, lol.

I used to until I was spending too much to repair it at 350,000km. I had the 1st gen FWD turbo and it was only 2600 lbs, unlike the ridiculous 3500 lb porker they call an Eclipse today. Fun little car, great in the snow, huge hatch with the seats down, easy to drive fast, let go in a controlled manner when pushed (I pushed it!), 32mpg(US) hwy, comfortable, etc... the list goes on. If they still sold that 1st gen car, I'd buy another in a second to be my "regular" car for shopping/winter/questionable places. Of course, I'd still DD my Elise through spring/summer/fall!

I had to go back and look at your wreck pictures again. The NC "First in Flight" on the license plate seems a little ironic since she flew your Exige almost as far as the Wright Flyer! The car and, more importantly, your wife seemed to fare very well considering the impact. I'm sure her emotions are more bruised than her body... a very lucky girl.

First, I am happy to read that your wife is doing well...that is great!

And I apologize if this question was already answered or if I'm being too nosey, but why did your wife decide to drive the car when you weren't home...brave woman! I don't think I would ever drive my boyfriend's car if he wasn't home...and I AutoX in it regularly Wasn't she nervous? I would have been totally shakey!

Like everyone else glad to hear your bride is okay. Great pic of your family at the recital; we do that too. And I agree with Randy, take her auto crossing. I have fun teaching my wife ABS brakes too on a soapy plastic mat on a tarmac. And what close ration steering is like in my S1 Elise, 1999.

I think it's funny/sad people would seriously care all that much if their car was trashed in an accident. If it was a vintage collectors item that was un-replaceable, understandable, but these cars are so totally replaceable!!!... or if there was some race coming up that you were planning all year to attend... but divorce over this? Sounds to me more like an excuse to divorce someone you already don't like. We're talking about lifeless objects guys... just posessions... and if totalling your car were grounds for a divorce i'd argue you're delaying something needlessly that you should have perhaps done already.

I rented the track and Spring mountain motorsports ranch,,,, two Elises... one for me.. one for my wife... who is a Skip Barber grad.. and let her spend the day with the instructor,, but the end of the day i could not lap her.... I love that woman.

It is a race to get to the garage to see who gets the Lotus and who gets stuck with the JR supercharged Miata,,, with Elise seats....
