Head and neck restraints

any suggestions on a system that will work with my harness system i bought from sec111. the scroth belts i bought are non hans compatible, so i need a solution. just looking for some feed back on other systems that are being used. i am only doing hpde events for now so all the safety stuff is new to me. i have shoes, gloves, helmet and the scroth 5 point but thats it. any suggestions for a newbie to the track seen would be appreciated.

actually on second thought I don't know if the Isaac can work safely with ASM belts, that could be some weird rotation -

If you have the Schroth ASM 4-point belts, and you've upgraded to a 5-point or 6-point, you don't need the "ASM" feature anymore, so you can replace the inboard shoulder harness with a non ASM version and you will then be HANS compatible. Sector111 sells the non-ASM shoulder belts individually (I might have been their first customer).

You could look into changing out the shoulder harness to one that works with a Hans. While you at it, you'd have to take a close look at the overall setup. Seat, harness /bar all need to met the specs for Hans compatibility.

A new system, that I will be taking a close look at:

defNder:
DefNder: Your Necks Best Defense
"You can use any 2 or 3 inch SFI or FIA approved safety harness."

Will later be able to work with 3 point seat belt, as well.

Larry that looks cool, does it work independent of the harnesses or is it more like a Hans?

I tend to think of it as a updated, better version of a Hans. He gives you some side protection. The Hans doesn't and with those type of impacts, a Hans can slip off a shoulder harness enough to not properly protect you if a frontal impacts come next. The defNder has the harness flares to help keep them in place in side impacts. The lower cost certainly doesn't hurt either.

I'm probably going to end up using the D-cel. doesn't depend on the seat belts at all and can be used in karts of anything else.

Whatever system you go with, be sure it's SFI 38.1 approved. Since all the systems are so much $$, might as well be sure you can use it with NASA & SCCA if you decide to go wheel to wheel racing.

I think HANS, DefNder and the R3 are the only onew out there for a decent price.

I'm a little leery of the Isaac concept because I don't like the idea of being attached to the car if I need to get out or am unconscious. Maybe that's just me; does anyone have some direct experience with this?

Here's another device I was looking at:
Speedway Safety Equipment - The White Head Restraint
It's a little weird, but I like the straightforward idea behind it: just strap the subject's head down to his spine!

never seen this one, or tried on any of the ones that are this concept.
i dont like the idea though, as i think you would have to wear the harness part of it pretty tight for it to potentially be effective.

lots of reinventing of the wheel with the H+N restraints.

I love my HANS, and the fact that just about every pro i see get out of a car is wearing a HANS makes me very comfortable with my choice.
I know first hand that they do work as advertised.
IMO, the HANS is worth the expense and the effort of getting the correct seat, and installing everything properly, as well as following all the other HANS installation guidlines.

the money spent is chump change compared to the injury from neck/spinal damage, and the ensuing lifestyle from it.
unfortunately, this I also know of first hand since one of my very close friends is a quadraplegic from a C2 neck fracture.
I wont get into a track car without my HANS; period.

This is Very similar to the safety solutions D-Cel that I Will probably end up getting. It works independently of the harnesses.

My issue with the Isaac is that I would need to make multiple and difficult movements inside the limited confines of the cockpit.

With my HANS, I hit the camlock, and I can come straight up and out of the cockpit in my Spec Racer. The radio connector isn't locked, so it'll easily yank free.

To deal with the Isaac I'd have to hit the camlock, reach up and undo one of the Isaac connections, then re-twist my body to reach the other as my cockpit is too confined for me to actually raise both my arms up at the same time (the forward facing roll cage struts interfere).

And as the Scaled One said...all the pros use HANS.

Per Sector 111's site, the ASM belts are now certified to work with HANS.

Yeah I'm in the market too.

DefNder looks interesting, so does some version of the R3. My question is seat compatibility. I've the Exige type seats with Schroth 6 points. The HANS does not work here, I guess that's why Lotus came up with this seat

Has anyone seen the DefNder and used it with stock Lotus seats?

BRTHTAKR,
I am going from memeory, so i could be mistaken, but i recall you saying the HANS wont work for you because it makes you feel as though you are being pushed towards the windsheild.
This isnt because of this seat you have pictured, its because the way the seat you have pictured is mounted, being at an incorrect angle(too verticle).
the seat needs to be tilted back at an angle, and not be upright.

I suspect Lotus threw in this seat, taughts it as HANS compatible, which i dont doubt, but then mounted it incorrectly for the model 20 HANS(the most common). maybe a model 10 HANS will work( i think i recall they make that, but i could be wrong).
when i put my new seat in my 944, my sparco circuit pro was too upright in its position, and it did what you descibed.
i needed to play with the mounts until i got the seat tilted back at the correct angle for it to be "HANS compatible".
how are those seats mounted, can you take a picture of the bracket that they use?
if you need, i will try to get some pictures of the mount in the 944 to show you the angle, etc..............
it may be until next week though, as i am going racing in the swift this weekend.
Josh

I will probably go with the R3...I've tried this on with the foam insert which can be tailored to any seat, and it is the most comfortable for me.
With the R3 you have more lateral motion compared to a HANS....there is a new R3 rage which is cheaper at $670
