The only other interesting pics I have were posted here: http://www.elisetalk.com/forums/show...&postcount=148

I'm guessing Littlerocket is too busy to take pics and send them.

Maybe we can get Jay to stop by Littlerocket's house and snap a few pics and post them...

Jay?!

When are you going to pick it up? We're doing a track day 5/12 at Grandsport Speedway, a new 1.4 mile 11 turn track that has just been paved. That would be a perfect shake down/tuning opportunity before sending it back to Washington.

The engine is out of the car and disassembled. The custom underdrive pulleys are fabbed and in my hands. The cnc lightened crank is in my hands and will be dropped at the coaters along with the rods and pistons day after tomorrow. Flow bench is so close to done it hurts. Things are moving along.

If the car is done and ready for hard work (broken in), I might take you up on that!

Amazing Working. Can't wait to see the final results. Maybe after your done you can work on the next 2zz platform. the COROLLA XRS(true sleeper). I would like to get as much power out of this 2zz N/A. The only thing thats actually holding me back is the California Emissions Testing and the 91 octane gas we have out here. Maybe we can talk when your not busy to see if can do something for my car

Well - we finished the flowbench about an hour and a half ago. Typical deal - as we were tying up the last odds and ends we kept finding $0.50 parts that we had bought one too few of or whatever and we had to make like 6 runs to Home Depot.

anyways its done - we'll get it calibrated tomorrow and get a test fixture made for the head and, hopefully, get some base flow numbers on the head so we can start working on the porting.

1. I've done this before with other cars. There is always something that delays things. I had a car sit 3 months waiting for a custom made intake manifold! Like Boosted2.0 said, .50 cent parts will kill ya! If it is custom, ya have to be prepared to wait for things.

2. It helps to have a backup car or two

Well - as I said bench id finished - We still have to mess with the hoses from the pitots to the FP1 a bit and troubleshoot a leak on the 3" range, but it works and works well!

Here are the final pictures:

Control valves for the pitots and static pickups

The flow ranges with the self averaging pitots and static pickups in them

The computer thats hooked to the FP1

The whole shootin match

What device is used to measure airflow? Turbine, pneumatic, hot wire sensor...

A couple of pressure transducers in the FP1. They are hooked up to a self averaging pitot tube in the flow range that measures impact pressure, a pressure port 2" upstream from the pitot in the flow range that measures static pressure, and a third port in the settlign chamber that measures pressure at the test fixture. The software averages these number, does some math, and spits out CFM and airspeed.

This is the same method superflow (the industry standard for flowbenches) uses in their computerized measureing systems.

You can also just use a regulat water or mercury manometer to measure the pressure and do the calculations on paper, but this way is MUCH simpler.

In its most simplified sense its a giant air pump with a computerized metering device that monitors airflow. The one we built can suck or flow in excess of 1000 CFM (Cubic feet of air per minute). To give you an idea, a 3" tube flows a bit over 700 CFM at 28" of vacuum (standard test pressure). So I can test CAIs, exhaust components, manifolds, throttle bodies, etc.

The way it works is you set the pressure you want to test at and measure flow through a component (I have a computer controlled pressure regulator). Then you modify that component (port it, or replace it with one of another hopefully superior design) and you test it under the same pressure, which will let you know how much the flow has increased.

You also have to pay attention to air speed as well as flow, which means using the flowbench in conjunction with a device called a pitot tube that is inserted into various areas of the item you are flow testing to test flow in a specific area. Since air is compressible it doesn't flow around bends evenly, and this data is very important for mapping where the bulk of the air is going through a component so you can pay attention to that area, as well as for the reason that if you kill airspeed off too much on at least the inlet to a head, you can wind up with poor fuel mixture with the air in the cylidner.
