An alternative to buying an engine from Toyota or Lotus.

The 2zz-ge was used in the Pontiac Vibe "GT". Not the lesser Vibes.

GM lists the motor for $5350.00
GMpartsdirect.com sells it for $3894.80 plus $856.86 shipping. They get you on the shipping!
Total is $4751.66

the part number is #889732I'm not sure exactly what comes with the engine, it surely isn't a dbw for an '06 replacement.

It's much cheaper than Toyota. They list it at $9190.82. I did an internet search and found it for $7352.66 plus shipping at Toyota direct. And it's way cheaper than Lotus for sure.

For those of you living in a sales tax friendly state, maybe your Pontiac dealer can match the GMdirect total price.

disclaimer: do your own verification before you use the above part number.

You can buy a brand new short block for something like $1800 from www.1sttoyotaparts.com if that is all you need. Even if you need a complete engine, add a used head and other parts from www.car-parts.com, then have the head worked on (e.g. replace valves and springs with titanium ones, do a port and polish). Altogether you would be under $4K.

You may get a short block for 1800.00 or so. The bills add up quickly if you want everything else new however. Start thinking about the head and all the valve gear, timing chains and sprockets, water pump, oil pump and injectors etc.

I was talking about something else used (www.car-parts.com is a used car parts locator). I've seen heads go for $200. My complete engine with 150 miles on it was $1800 shipped. It was essentially a brand new engine with nothing at all wrong with it (YMMV). It came from a wrecked Matrix XRS. I believe the Vibe GT also has the ports near the header that have to be plugged, but they are both 2ZZ-GE engines.

But that $4751 is not too bad, I guess, for a brand new engine (not a crapshoot situation like used parts can be). Maybe you could arrange your own shipping. Their shipping cost is much too high.

Or just get a honda K20a motor with transmission for less than 6k

With all the problems some are having our 2zz motors, if I was to replace my motor that's what I'd do.

It looks like the price on rebuilt long blocks has come down and the shipping charge isn't too bad either. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Rebui...QQcmdZViewItem

Don't forget that the price of the engine is only the beginning. The cost of the adaptation will be several times that price. Then there is the loss of value in the car, since it is now heavily () modified. Oh yea, we need to add in the price of a new ECU, tuning, new instruments (since they are controlled by the Lotus ECU), etc. - the list goes on. Not to mention that the car is no longer "smog legal" (and just because you happen to live in an area that you can get away with that, doesn't mean that you won't move, or the laws in your area won't change).

Seriously, there's nothing inherently wrong with the Toyota engine, and those that keep bringing up "Honda engine" haven't gone through the actual complications of doing an engine swap.
