Unhappy Belt tensioner mounting

Hello.

I have removed the belt tensioner on the Exige S for an exhaust exchange and I must now put it back in place... and I can't!!!

What is the procedure for putting it back as the tension needed to be applied to the belt is huge!!!

Please help!

did you pop out the little black shock looking thing? If so you cant(at least not easily) put that back in with a belt on. with the belt off bolt that back on then compress the tensioner with a 19mm wrench to put the belt back on.

Hi ZJ,

Thanks for your reply.
I have tried with the belt off but I cannot compress the shock with the 19 mm wrench, it is too hard!

How to mount this damned belt???

Here is a good exemple of Exige S tensioner! Same than a 2ZZ Toyota engine (see Elige vs Elise thread).

Try to turn on opposite side. You need to turn forcing the small shock to be shorter.

take the belt off, you will have plenty of movement on the swing arm to put the tensioner back on..

torque it down I believe its 22ft lbs.. dont quote me, check toyota bgb..

use the 19 on the nut, be sure NOT to slip or damage the nut.. its cast alum, and prone to slipping, chipping , etc..

be sure to get full strokes on the tensioner about 3-4 times before putting the belt back on.. each stroke 3-4 seconds..

you should be able to use a good 19mm wrench and double up on it with another wrench to compress the tensioner.. or use a 1/2 inch socket and long cheater bar if you didnt have wheaties for breakfast..
