Buying a new clutch-what do I need?

I have decided on an ACT clutch beased on everyone's feedback in various threads. BUT...

Do I need a whole kit for $400 or can I get just the clutch plate for $100? I don't want ot short-change the job, I just don't understand what I need to get, my first clutch job. I hope to pull the tranny out this weekend if I'm brave enough. I figured I might as well replace the clutch too.

Jerry,

If you're replacing a worn-out clutch, I recommend getting a complete kit, with a new throwout bearing etc. The best price I found online was here:

ACT Toyota Celica Racing Clutch Kit - FREE Shipping

I don't know that the clutch is worn out, but was told if I'm changing the transmission I should replace the clutch while I'm in there. The car has 37,000 miles on it and lots of hard launches from pro Solos for two seasons.

Sounds like a judgment call then. The throwout bearing probably has some good miles left. If it were me I'd replace everything, just because getting back in there is kind of a pain.

While it's easy, I suggest you install a light-weight flywheel and use new ARP bolts, torqued to their spec.

Fidanza flywheel with an ACT clutch kit. Make sure you get the full face disc and not a puck disc.

I think what he is saying is that since it will all be apart, that's the time to do the flywheel.

I love Joe we work together every week on his major lotus project. I always kid him about being the eternal optimist. He could give you the upside of a nuclear blast. " Carl think of all the money you'll save on heat"..carl

Any linkies on a fidanza flywheel? There are a couple varieties, I won't spend too much on it because frankly, I'm not worried about getting every last advantage, I just drive her to work these days. I already separately ordered the ACT HD clutch kit. Thanks!!

Fidanza 130231 Aluminum Lightweight Flywheel Toyota 1.8L 2ZZ Engine

This is just one site. I'm sure you could find many more.

Here are the ARP's mentioned (I think overkill)

MWR ARP Bolt Set - Toyota 1zz/2zz Flywheel - MWR-108008 van ARP - Monkeywrench Racing - Celica -

The beauty of the Fidanza, is if you ever wear it out or screw up the friction surface, you can just replace the surface.

"While it's easy" means since you have dropped the transmission to replace the clutch, it's a simple matter to replace the flywheel. Dropping the transmission, on the other hand, ... is not "easy".

Thanks,

Joe

Got stuff ordered, thanks. After changing the clutch in my girlfriend's Altima yesterday (another transaxle, same sort of project) I'm feeling much braver to tackle the Elise. I will start later this week.
