? function of air adder tube on exhaust header

Anyone just cut this thing off and weld the end closed? It doesn't look to serve any function for our cars. Do the aftermarket headers have one? Not that I've seen anyway.

Weld it closed if you want, or saw it off at the manifold and put a threaded plug in.
