geez, there sure is a lot of 'mine is bigger than yours' attitude going around for guys that drive such teeny toy cars...
the title was ill-chosen, but it was meant to be a bit comical. I was in break in (1000mi service tomorrow), so I was being really easy on it, and getting used to the clutch in the car. I don't like the smell of clutch, smells like money I don't want to pay and time in the shop I don't want to wait for. I've had all kinds rev up at stop lights, had a late model vette follow me onto the freeway (I had no idea he was there, except to look up to see what was making that horrible noise, only to see him fading in the rear view mirror, scowl on his face). I'm not out to race people in morning traffic, a lot of people apparently are. my early launches were basically from idle, just enough gas to get off the line without slipping the clutch or jolting the car. the car DOES bog when doing this. I've gotten more comfortable, break in is over, and I'm doing much better now. I'm not out to be a hoodlum, just have a bit of fun. no, I do not want to swap clutches every 5k miles. I don't want to be beaten off the line at stoplights, is that so wrong? sorry to create such a stir... not really that sorry . ![]() |

randy, your advice was what I was looking for...
funny about the donuts. I was coming out of the bank the other day, and a guy standing outside the bar next door (at 10am.. on a weekday...), was yelling how f'in bad the car was, then yelled 'do a donut!'. this in down town. in a small parking lot. in a small town. daylight. in a car that is not exactly hard to track down if you do something really stupid. So, there will be no thread about donuts, already practiced. kidding. |

The practice launches are always fun because you line up against completely different cars. The only time I got completely smoked was by a 7 running DM.

i had a question. i did search. this is the closest thread i found - no answer -so here's the question: how many times do you expect a clutch can be smelled before it goes? i smelled mine twice already. today and another day. going in for the first service tomorrow. the first time i wasn't even trying to get going that quickly, the second time... well i was.
the clutch thing is quite annoying. having practiced with front wheel drive cars i am really good at getting going quickly by slipping the clutch - it's a habit i have to break with the elise - i don't even think about it and it happens. and none of the clutches ever complained. but the good thing is, like was already mentioned, the car gets going nicely even just off idle and without trying. |

I think you can smell it many times and it will still be fine. That so far has been my experience. I am upgrading the clutch this week, but it has been making smells for many months.
I found some very hard launches helped make it better.

I'm launching without much regard for the clutch, though anything above 4k is worthless wheelspin. I find flooring the gas and dropping the clutch at ~3.5-4k is the best mix. does anyone do this or keep the engine at constant launch rpm, then floor it as the clutch drops? just curious...
I need sticky tires. stock ones aren't doing it, and hoosiers won't last long when driven 1.5k miles a month... let us know the wear on your old clutch... are you putting in an ACT? |

The LSD will be stock legal, but the ACT clutch is not and that, and other things, puts us in ASP.
Robert and I are prepping both cars. The green machine is being prepped for SS and the Yellow Menace is prepped for ASP. Quick rundown- Green SS: SSR rims Hoosier tires or Yokohama A048s BWR swaybar and adjustable endlinks Penske shocks Alignment CG-Lock Hope and a Prayer Yellow ASP car: 15" lightweight racing rims (will lower the car) Hoosier and Kumho tires (testing next weekend) LSD CAI BWR Swaybar CG Lock Springs Penske shocks Alignment Battery To be done for the ASP car- ECU change Header Exhaust The question is if we can make an ASP car that is still streetable for me. I don't know.
