I've got the Moroso pan and would imagine that it's needed unless you track the car. So to answer Dave's question, I doubt it's needed for even the most aggressive street driver. I just can't think of a place on the street where you can get multi-second periods of 1+G side loads... But then again, I'm a pansy of a street driver I reserve the hard driving for the track

Darksol and I did a little real world test of the moroso pan a while back. We poured a couple quarts of gas in the pan and then tilted the pan from one side to the other. It took SEVERAL seconds for the gas to make it from one end of the pan to the other with the majority of the gas staying in the area designated for the oil pickup. All those little trap doors work surprisingly well. Not real scientific, I know, but we were both a bit taken back by just how well the trap doors work with a very thin fluid like gasoline (probably ~similar~ to viscosity of hot oil)...

I rec'd a later batch of the pans and have had no problems with leaking of any sort.

The toughest part about the whole operation is getting the old pan off. Major PITA, as the gorilla snot that's holding it on is something else For anyone interested, I put a little tutorial on my webpage in the tech section.

Best,

Phil

Moroso has significantly improved their weld technique on the pans. I'd be very interested to hear from anyone who has bought a pan recently and has any sort of leakage problems. We've seen none lately.

On the pan issue, I'd definitely add it to a track car. Accusumps are good too but unfortunately they don't address the oil pump issue. We've had several customers explode their oil pumps at normal RPM levels in long turns when running sticky tires. I assume oil starvation is the issue since the oil pump would otherwise need to exceed 10,000 rpm to explode. The Accusump feeds in oil after the oil pump which would not help this issue.

Hi, I bought my Moroso pan from nolimitmotorsports around late June of this yr. Last weekend, i had the car up on jackstands and found seepage around a couple of the weld seams on the pan. To my knowledge there was no extra gasket material added to the inside of the pan as Jay has suggested; would adding it to the outside of the welds even work? (apart from looking ghastly). I have pics at home and can post them tonite.

probably not.. you can try though, it sure beats having to drop the pan again.. for the stuff to work, you must clean the surface really well.. I hate to say this, but perhaps JBweld may work better on the outside.. your installer should of added gasket maker on the insides..

Late June 08 Moroso pan. In the first 2 pics, one can clearly see oil coming from the weld seams. In the last pic, one can see that there is a fine spray pattern coming from the seam; oil is spraying around the nut. I have to be especially careful watching my oil level now. May try the JBWeld after cleaning the surfaces well.

I recently got the Moroso oil pan from Monkeywrench last week and had it pressure tested for leaks prior to install. The results showed negative signs of leaks.

I have an "early" pan which did indeed have seeping issues. I made a jig out of plate steel to bolt the thing down square (was close, but not totally flat) and went over all the beads with my TIG.

No leaks, perfectly flat, works great. I've given the car a healthy amount of beans on the track, and had no pressure issues, though I do plan on adding an accusump as well at some point. Namely as they're cheaper than engines and I like pre-oiling.

One thing worth mentioning though is that it's a good idea to use a Toyota pan gasket with a VERY light coat of FIPG (Toyota gasket maker-- basically black silicone) on both sides of the gasket, versus a bead of silicone on the bare metal. The gasket compresses a fair bit, and as it's porous, allows the silicone to adhere very well, while still making it reasonably easy to remove the pan in future.

I couldn't find anything about the steel oil pump gear.
At what power levels is this gear necessary?
What is the problem with the stock gear?
