Moroso oil pan & helicoil repair :(

Guess I've been working out at my gym too much lately, but I successfully stripped the threads on my Moroso oil pan drain plug during an oil change. I'm going to apply a helicoil repair on it, but wasn't sure what size kit to get.

If anyone else has made the same mistake as I , and repaired it with a helicoil kit, could you let me know what size kit you used?

Thanks, Rob.

I have been found guilty of the same thing at one time. I used what is caled a "Time-Sert". They are much better for oil pan repairs, but a bit more pricey. 1/2x20 is the size.

on the link under drain plug, it has the first option as 1/2x20 for alluminum oil pans. that is the one. I measured the one I have and it was around 5/8" long.

Might I recommend a ball valve drain plug to replace the bolt-like one that's in there? In this case, you'd not have to worry about pulling the drain plug again. Quick Oil Drain Valve You'd get the one for the Celica and it works like a charm. Its a spring loaded lock mechanism and is even more secure thanks to the undertry making it virtually impossible for anything to hit it.

the drain plug on the moroso is a different size than the one for the stock pan, but if those valves give tread and pitch, he has that info.

I would suggest a better fix than a helicoil. Take the pan to a welder and have a male -8an bung welded to the drain plug boss and then just use a -8an cap for the plug.

Yup. Weld a bung. Helicoil will not seal properly.

weld in a bung then install a fumoto valve....then dont worry about it again. QuickOilDrainValve.com - the best way to change oil

edit: just noticed walnut suggested the same. I also use the one with a nipple so that I just reach in there and slip a hose on then open the valve and can drain the oil without removing the undertrays.

Is there a version of the fumoto valve that fits the Moroso pan as is?

Looking at thier site, it should be part#: F-101. That's the valve for a 1/2 in 20 thread size. Tom

Thanks! Is it confirmed that the Moroso plug is 1/2x20? Anyone?

Hey Shinoo,

You guys should consider this for the oil pan you're developing!

Taking Casey's suggestion of welding a AN bung and cap -- have a friend that can do this for me, just need to pull the pan -- ugh -- not really a difficult job, just messy and a pain to scrap all the existing sealant off both surfaces.

Since I'm there, I'm looking for an new O ring for the oil line/filter sandwich plate -- anyone know where I can get one quick? As in by Thursday (10/22) since I'm heading out to Infineon on Sat/Sun to run with NASA TT group.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions folks.

Rob
