Question Preperation for a new Oil Filter Sticky - Need Your Input...

I’m looking to perform my first oil change on my Elise, and hope to make a one-stop sticky post reference for everyone here. So far I’m frustrated with what I’ve been able to track down online, and I haven’t been able to gather all the facts here on ET. If you could all help (read: correct) me with the following, I’ll submit it as a sticky in the next week or so..

Subjectively, it seems we should all stay away from the YZZA1 and YZZD1. If you want to stay OE then the 10004 is the way to go (make sure it has a red gasket!). If you want to go OE+, then the TRD (but which one – help me here guys) seems the way to go. If you want to go aftermarket, than the K&N seems to be your best bet.

Here’s where I’m at so far – I’ve been able to determine that the following oil filters seem to be most common:

Toyota OE #90915-YZZA1
Less than optimal filter, black gasket, black housing.
~$8 at any Toyota Parts Desk ($4 online)

Toyota OE #90915-10004
Optimal, red gasket, black housing, used by most Lotus Dealers.
~$12 at some local Toyota Parts Desk. Some dealers won’t order it, some will. Keep dialing. ($8 online)

Toyota OE #90915-YZZD1
Still less optimal, but slightly bigger than the YZZA1 filter, but of the same (sub par) “grade” of construction as the YZZA1. OE for Lexus IS300 motor,
~$8 at any Toyota Parts Desk ($4 online)

Toyota Racing Development #00602-90915-006
USA made YZZA1 and 10004 replacement, not known to be used on an Elise yet. ~$13 online

Toyota Racing Development #00642-90915-003
Japanese made YZZA1 and 10004 replacement, not known to be used on an Elise yet. ~$22 online

Toyota Racing Development #90915-001
Japanese made (red housing) replacement, seems to be preferred by many eTalkers, but I cannot find much information on this filter. ~$24 online.

K&N HP-2009
Optimal filter, used by many eTalkers (endorsed by Stan!), good filtration (better than the OE stuff) and good flow. ~$12 at most auto parts stores.

Known filters that DO NOT work:
TRD #90915-07

K&N HP-2009
K&N HP-1003 (this is smaller than the 2009)
TRD part number 90915-01

Toyota OE #90915-YZZA1 has been superseded by 90915-YZZF1. Additionally, the plug gasket 90430-12028 has been superseded by 90430-12031.

The Mobile 209 is bigger than the 1 series. I prefer that and the PureOne that Ace10 referred to. Both of them are from reputable mfg's and seem to have excellent build quality.

Go get a Canton Mecca and never buy another oil filter ever again. Cartridges, maybe, but less often than standard filters (Every 2-3 oil changes). 8 micron, no bypass, beautiful anodized aluminum reusable filter. None of this paper crap...

Transonic gets his 90915-10004 for $7.99 + something like $8.95 shipping from McGeorge Parts.com.

I am using the Mobile 1 209 (as are many others), which is larger than the stock filter and the M1-103. I got it at my local auto parts store (Kragen). I just happened to be in Wal-Mart today and saw they had it on the shelf as well for $9.98. which was about $2 cheaper than the auto-parts store.

same part number, different trade name? www.pureoil.com does not list the "proline" product line. perhaps it's an old brand or a non-consumer brand?

I've always used WIX. I was recently told that WIX filters are Mobil 1's re-badged. Who knows

I bought a stock of TRD filters - but they are labelled 90915-SP010. $25 (ish)

Couple of FAQs you might want to answer:

Mobil 1 is labelled "Turbo Diesel" - but is fine for the Elise
There are two Fumoto valves listed (with and without nipple) - both fit.

WIX makes filters for a lot of companies and OEMs.

I need to do an oil change before this weekend, and was pleased to find this thread as well as
http://www.sandsmuseum.com/cars/elis...oilfilter.html

However, calling a couple dealers today to buy a filter resulted in confusion...

First, Boardwalk said that the lotus oil filter, part # A120 E662 775 24, was actually the Toyota 90915-YZZF1, as mentioned is post 4 above. I'm not sure how this compares to the desirable 90915-10004?

Then I called SVAG, and he said that the filter under that same part number actually said Lotus right on the filter, said lotus has been supplying their own filters for a while, and that the toyotas were just for the first couple years. Can anyone confirm that?

Anyone have a favorite filter they're running? And any of you in the bay area know where I could pick one up in person this week?

It would not surprise me for Lotus to supply their own filter. This way it could be $49.99 and be an official lotus part (the Toyota part in a lotus box) lol.
I've seen Official Lotus fuses too. They are by littlefuse the same as any other car, but are in a Lotus bag and come with an outrageous price for people who don't know the difference.

Dealer installed Oil Filter

As an FYI, Park Place Ltd, Lotus Dealer in Bellevue installs:

Toyota OE #90915-YZZF1

Has anyone tried Napa Gold, i usually buys these and they are made by WIX.

Just go to a parts store and pick up an M1 or a Purolator Pure One. They're both high quality and readily available.

Actually pick up 2 or 3. You never know what filter your closest store will be out of on the Sat. morning that you're wanting to do your oil changes on.

K&N HP 2009, I like the nut on the bottom. Usually find them on sale between changes.
