Okay, not something simple, it's definitely something in the box. Since it does seem to matter what gear it's in, it is likely the diff. I'm going on that assumption. F*ck. anyway, I found a tranny with an open diff for $800 or so, and one with a LSD for $1600. Fair?

I don't want to try to fix it myself, unleast not until after I gat it out of the car and then maybe I'll play a little operation and see what I can learn.

I'm doubtful the average guy can tear and rebuild a gearbox.. You need lots of specialized pullers and even with those tools its a tough one.. expect to pay hundreds on labor to tear/rebuild.. fwiw, its a real close one between new or rebuilt gearbox.. I just had one done with new brass only, even with a parts discount and a friend rebuilding it, its pricey..

Sorry to hear this news. I think we were all hoping it was something simple.

Me too. I wonder why? maybe it has something to do with the 300 plus standing starts I put on the car in a couple of seasons of Pro Solos. Still, I haven't raced the car in 18 months and now it dies, just getting on the freeway. perplexing.

I have another offer for $1,000 but I think I can do better (see $800 offer above) I'm going back to an open diff since I don't race it anymore and don't need the LSD anyway. My first Elise was great fun with an open diff, and I can tune out the push anyway (already did).

Now the question is: can I swap the trannies myself or will I need a shop...

I'd figured as much; that's why I had the front-drive/rear-drive qualifier. But I thought I'd throw it out there since I'd had much experience with CV failure (with the aforementionedHondas).

Edit: now that there's more info, not an issue. However, I'll leave it here just in case someone, somewhere has clicking when they turn, now they know.

Sorry to hear that, jer. Good luck!
