Warranty question...

Has anyone ever heard of a warranty being voided for replacing the air intake on a car with an aftermarket part?

Forgive my ignorance... I've never been into modifying cars in the past so all of these concerns are new to me.

Only if the factory/dealer can prove that the warranty issue was caused by the intake- otherwise there should not be a problem.

Exactly. Google the Magnuson Moss Warranty Act for more than you'd ever care to know.

I've heard many stories of service departments counting on the average owner's ignorace of this law to deny warranty coverage for unrelated failures.

In relation to what JD said, I had a EVO Powerflow on my Boxster that caused a check engine light to turn on. The dealer refused to work on the car under warranty (only replacing a Mass Airflow Sensor) unless I brought it back to stock.

I had my MAF on my Audi die on me due to an aftermarket air filter...

The oil from the aftermarket filter got on the MAF wires and messed it up. The dealer fixed it for free but did mentioned to me that they weren't supposed to. I had one month left on my warranty and I think they wanted my return business.

On certain (all?) cars, aftermarket intakes can also mess up the air flow measurement, and as a result of that, make the engine run lean. So if you run an aftermarket intake, and your engine blows up, the dealer/manufacturer might have a legitimate reason to deny your warranty claim.

It's important to understand that there really is no such thing as a "voided warranty" from installing aftermarket parts. All they can do is deny specific warranty claims if they can proove that the damage was caused by your aftermarket parts.

And keep in mind that, even if the dealer is being completely unreasonable in finding a connection, you could be stuck taking on a long and costly battle. You might be legally right, but you could easily lose the war of attrition.
