Does anybody know what this connection on the engine does and should I be worried that the wire looks to be under some tension?

unsure... crankshaft position sensor, perhaps? shouldn't be so tight. The engine rotates a little on its mounts under acceleration. It's going to be pulling on that little wire until it comes off. try pulling gently to slacken it a bit.
