Would it make sense...

to re-program the ECU to open the second set of Cams earlier? Wouldn't that make a bit of a performance difference?

Lotus already did that compared to the setting for GTS.

Yeah, switch too soon and you'll actually lose power in that range.

Very true, just look at the torque curve of the high-speed cams on a dyno plot. The torque drops like a rock as the RPMs fall below 6000.

On the other hand, with FI, you might be able to drop the high-speed activation point down to somewhere in the 4000-5000 range and realize more torque than the low-speed cam produces. That would probably blow the emission numbers off the chart, though.
