Last night I finished my installation of a CF console and everything was fine until while driving tonight I shifted to 5th and something made a little "pop" in the shifter area and I lost all the forward located gears. Luckily I still had 2nd, 4th, and 6th so I limped home.
Of course I'll commence the painful process of disassembling the console, but I'm wondering what to be looking for. There's one more clue: As I finished wrestling the new console into place a very small piece that looked like a spring clip fell out. (pictured below) I assumed (hoped) that the clip was simply a tensioner from one of the electrical connections that I had just recoupled, but now I'm thinking otherwise...
So I think the clip may indeed be from the hazard light switch connector as seen on the top side of this photo from Sands Museum...
Thoughts?
Still not sure what went "pop" though. I did spray a little white lithium grease into each ball/socket end of the cables... Maybe I shouldn't have done that.
Mystery solved. That spring clip was indeed from the hazard light switch which "popped" apart, falling to pieces and jamming the full forward motion of the shifter cables.
Now I need to find a new switch. These things are manufactured by Ford but only sold in Europe (apparently used on Transit vans). Lotus of West Covina has them listed for $49.49 and British Racing Group/Lotus Garage lists $61.64... I think both need to order them from the UK and then ship them to me.

Funny, but while I believe in coincidence, not so much with cars...
