Tragic story about my Lotus Elise. Video inside

Hey everyone

So I have always wanted a Lotus Elise. Finally it came time to buy, and i found one that was in PERFECT condition in Chicago. I am located in Florida, so i flew to Chicago, purchased the car, and began the trip back to florida. I have not traveled much outside of florida, so it was the perfect opportunity to explore a few states. On the way, i stopped for gas in TN, and what you see in the video happened. The video is actually surveillance from the gas station that i recorded useing my iPhone. Needless to say, i am heart broken. I have been looking for another Elise or Exige, but no luck.

Holy crap.

Share some details. Couldn't tell, but did that guy drive FORWARD into you are back into it?

He pushed you at least 50 feet. Was your ebrake on?

Did anything happen prior to that? That doesn't look like a 'oops, didn't see you there', that looks like something purposeful from a movie.

Is the car being repaired?

And the guy LEFT? Did you get his plate from the video?

There is a special place in hell for that cretin.

-'08 Elise SC (Chrome Orange) - Sold 10/31/2014

yup... not even 12 hours and my dream gets crushed. She was caught, but she doesn't appear to have insurance. she was 20 years old, with an open container.

sorry for the lack of details. here's some clarification

The lotus was stopped at the rear pump. I finished pumping gas, went inside and bought coffee. Then as i was walking back to the car, i see her back up into the car, drag it 50 feet, and run. I got her tag number, and she was caught. the car is totaled

the part that really hurts is that I work very hard and earn my money. And for someone to damage someone else's property, and feel that it is ok to just run boggles my mind. I simply cannot understand how someone can think they can just run away form their responsibility.

I wish it was man. It honestly seemed like a bad dream. However, it is the painful reality

Just because she does not have insurance does not mean that the courts can not grant restitution from her.

Tragic story about my Lotus Elise. Video inside

Molsb23 - truly very sorry this happened to you. I, like you, recently flew far from my state to purchase my lotus, but opted to have it shipped back via Intercity Lines. I'm very, very, very nervous until it gets to my door. Like you, I work very hard and have been dreaming of owning a lotus for over 7 years.

You may not be able to collect from her now, but sue her and get a judgement ANYWAY. Judgements are good for a long time, and her situation may change in the future ( she get married into money, inheritance, sobers up and becomes an executive - who knows). AT that time you canuse your judgement and attach her assets. In the least, the lawsuit could be cathartic.

But what's on that video is truly troubling. She didn't even NEED to back up to leave!!! WTF?!

Hopefully, you will find another one.

I agree. the person that was driving the car was not actually the owner. So there are 2 people i can go after. I'm worried that if i sue them, she might not have an income or anything to pay the judgment. So i would have incurred all the expenses of suing, and not get anything out of it.

Again, you can't get blood from a stone... The courts could award $20,000,000 but what's that going to leave the OP? A judgement and a bill from his lawyer...

Insurance is to protect your assets should you be at fault for something... not to fix the other guy's car, etc. It protects your assets by fixing the other guy's car, etc. People with NO assets are typically the ones who have no insurance as they have nothing to protect...

... no insurance...

... 20 years old...

... and an open container...

How about small claims. Shouldn't cost too much. I bet the owner who can afford that car has to have something....or am I giving humanity too much credit?
