What does he hope to accomplish by buying his son a car like that at such a young age?

I ask that and I missed the youngest age group by only a couple of months.

I'm pretty sure alright. Of course he'll be using it from time to time but it'll practically be his son's DD. I told him to be careful....

Maybe I should have asked "Is it fair to assume..."

I was wondering what basis people tend to go off when they act like younger drivers just 'aren't good enough' to drive cars like Lotus.

consider sending your 16 yo kid off on a full size bike of any sort.
especially when he had no two-wheeler prior experience.....
there's a recipe for a broken body, even worse than high school football.

Those averages surprise me a little. I would have guessed the largest group would be 30-40 or 40-50. I was paying for my home before I bought my Lotus. I sold my '68 GT 500 and bought an Exige with the profit.

A lotus at 16 is crazy, whether money was a factor or not.
