Car Broken Into

unfortunate situation happened to me a few days ago. a group of dudes took knives to my soft top and broke into my lotus in the middle of the night. all they took was a 250 dollar gps but the roof is just destroyed.

it angers me to no end what some ppl will do for a lousy gps. so now i need to get a new roof and the insurance company is saying its gonna have to come out of my pocket.

figured id share my misfortunes with everyone. if anyone knows of a CO hardtop for sale please let me know...im done messing around with softtops haha.

Same thing happened to me about 6 months ago. Don't know who your insurance is with, but I just had to pay my deductible and they covered the rest. The soft-top is pretty expensive; think it was about $1500 or so.

Do people regularly park their Lotuses on the street? That doesn't seem wise, given the lack of bumpers, and penchant for a-holes to do things to exotics .. like pee on them.. or slash them..

if you don't have a garage to store your lotus, you probably shoudn't be driving a lotus.

regardless, that sucks to hear somebody did that to your car. insurance "should" be covering it minus your deductible.

I would NEVER park an Elise/Exige on the street. They attract too much attention, the are fragile and the cost to repair the damage that COULD happen is not worth it.

I have three guard(very lazy) dogs that bark at everything that moves(including myself, probably cause I keep driving off in their bed )
and a fence and a car port and a cover... and I still worry about my exige

+1, or at least a car cover in a driveway in a nice neighborhood is probably OK. Still risking it though. Street is begging for trouble

Firstly, I am very sorry for your unfortunate experience.
I understand that thieves actually look from the suction cup rings on the windshield as an indication you have a GPS tucked away in the car.
I live in a condo with no garage and keep my car under 3, yes 3 car covers, have an additional, external perimeter alarm that buzzes and turns on a flood light in my condo that illuminates the car. Oh, yes, I have a CCTV camera monitoring 24/7.
You gotta do what you gotta do
Sorry again, Michael

They say "Never lock a soft top car".

I keep very little in my car, but often my GPS and V1 is the car. It's a debate to not lock it and some kid or not as motivated criminal could just open the door, or a more motivated criminal costing you a top. Tough call. I HATE thieves. That is the only thing that scares me about owning a gun, because I hate thieves enough that I know I really don't have much of an issue putting a big hole or 6 in them. If they don't want chest and cranium ventilation they shouldn't be breaking into things. They should count that as a chance they are willing to take.

Bingo, it's a dilemma.

I've always said and will say it yet again - this is another great reason to own and use a car cover.

It's funny but I was actually told this as well for the very reason of, it's better to lose the 250 GPS than to lose the softtop and the GPS.

That's a sorry story to hear. I am glad to hear though that there are condo and non-garage owners out there that have an Elise and can make it work, as that's what situation I'd be looking at.

The trouble is that then some freak might try and hot-wire it and trash the steering lock!

I think if they are going that far, they are going that far anyway.
The one good thing about the Lotus is that with the blinking light for the immobilizer inside, some people think the alarm is armed or that it's locked even when it isn't. I've had people wait at the door thinking it's locked when it isn't.

That Sucks big time.

I used to own a Celica with a soft top and actually drove up one night to see a guy in the back of my trunk. When I approached him he attacked me with a screw driver that he used to slash my top and steal the radio.

Insurance sucks as they aren't going to cover you for anything and if you do decide to report it, your deductible will go up and they'll just laugh at you as they take more of your money.

Insurance is such a joke. Only worth it if you crash or lose your vehicle early on....or if you manage to run over a bunch of people.

But yeah, Soft Tops should be BANNED.

My dad once taught to never leave even pocket change lying around in plain sight. the most more CDs or electronic devices. Some people are just looking for a reason.
