I've never had the front off, but when I took the rear off for a weekend this is what I did.
Lay the foam from behind the seats on the ground. It is lightly padded and saucer shaped. The rear clam will sit "bumper" down. It was very stable. For safety and peace of mind I leaned it lightly against the wall and used a strap to keep it from moving much. It did not settle at all, and was in a very easy position to pick up for reinstall.
