I'm so sorry.

Harold,
I can't believe this Within 2 days of the most fun day I've had so far with my Elise at the Pancakes meeting you arranged on Saturday.

Guess I'll be putting mine away very very soon.

Keep your head up. It will get fixed.

John

The bottom photo with the "Elise" decal on the ground really hurts.

The sadness will pass when you realize you can make your Elise better looking and stronger than ever.

Oh No! ... so sorry

I've hit black ice in my past. I know the "thrill" ... or chill when it happens.

It looks bad but maybe not a total loss... good luck!

Trying to look on the good side here. Like kestrel says, I don't have to worry about storing her for the winter.

Win, cancel that order for a Battery Tender--you can have mine.

Nugg_Dawg, send a case of your best "poison."

This is still hard to look at over a year later, so I feel your pain. I hate to say it, but I think your's looks worse. Hard to know without seeing the chassis.

sucks bad, it's a shame. Glad your safe and in good shape, physically anyway

that said, this is not the reason to put an elise away for the winter, it's a nasty lesson in using tires appropriate for the job/season. Doesn't matter what car, doesn't matter what the dealer tells you about some new fangled traction controlled, stability controlled, god controlled SUV or race car.

Bad tires for the weather/road/climate = accident/ditch/ or worse

I'd put my money down that until you're bottom out poor liz on the snow, with a "real" set of dedicated winter tires, it'd do laps around the latest offering from anybody else without winter tires. In fact, the elises low weight gives it an edge with regards to ability to turn and stop for all the reasons you already know.

That said, fear of those other vehicles on the road with the wrong tires would be a reason to put the elise away.

Sorry again, that suck. Looks like winter tires should be in the budget. They might even last a while considering the low weight of the car.

Ouch. I guess mine was good from a few perspectives.

* The airbag did not go off, so I don't think the speed was too great. (Does anyone know the threshold?)
* None of the tires/suspension hit a curb, as there was no curb.
* The strike was direct center, and the windshield did not crack.
* I was not sited, and noone was injured.

I don't mean to be confrontational, and I appreciate everybodys' support, but I don't think winter tires are the solution. (I had AD07 Yoks, the standard tires.)

This is ice, not snow. The only good solutions are to

1. Put the car away when it is below freezing or
2. Slow way the heck down on ice.

The thought of ice did not even occur to me this morning because, as Exigent so deligently pointed out, it has not snowed here yet. The truth is, it was 32 degrees in Owings Mills this morning. As someone else said, only studs or chains or going slower would have made a difference, IMHO.

I always have a rule of thumb ..... I park mine at the first sign of salt... as soon as I know they're going to put salt down for anything...it's in the garage for the winter.

Let me try to put this in perspective.

There has been no salt in Baltimore yet this year. Last night was a frost. Somebody left a garden hose running across this particular street.

The only thing the officer did, besides deliver my arse to Krispey Kreeme to wait for two hours for a toe-truck, was to order salt for 25 feet of patchy ice in front of the telephone pole pictured above. It was not snowy/icy here.

Friday night we're all meeting at the bar at Bob Evans to toss back a few pancake shooters.
