Coupling... Recommend a Jack for my Elise

I just bought my Elise on 12/28/07 and need a jack to install a HID kit. Jacks and options are welcomed. What have you found to work best? Autozone/Walmart brands not excluded. Online links to proper, quality jacks would be appreciated.

Why not start a group buy?

^ I've been eyeballing that one too for a long time now. To my surprise I have a huge 3 ton jack that actually fit under my car. It had <1 inch clearance but got the job done.

I'd prefer the one linked above because the "saddle" looks to be completely flat which you'll want for our cars.

I have a low profile Craftsman but it was $20 (on sale) more than the HF version and seems to be essentially the same jack. I had a jack from Wallyworld before the Craftsman and hated it. Didn't roll well, etc. Used it mostly for the tractor, then gave it away.

Get the Harbor Freight jack. It very light, it's cheap and it looks good. Also, the handle comes off very quickly and easily (and the handle also comes apart quickly) for easy storage/transport. After using a standard issue floor jack for years that weighed about 75 pounds, going to the light weight aluminum was a real treat.

I use the same one, it's lightweight and takes a few pumps to get the car pretty high off the ground. I'm not sure about the longevity/quality but for changing tires it works well. It's highly recommended to put jack stands under the car when you're doing maintenance with it.

Here is a direct link to the Harbor Freight one:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=91039

It is a perfect match for the Lotus. I have had mine for 2+ years with lots of use since. I added some pipe insulation to the handle on mine to protect the car.

+1 for the jack. I found a set of stands at Pep Boys, fitted a piece of plastic conduit to the tops as pads. Worked great when I installed my HIDs.

I bought this setup when it was on sale. I could use two more of the jack stands. Jack is lightweight and works great!

I was going to put my car up on ramps the other day to finally install the quick release kit for the underpanel. Then I found out that my jacks were too tall to be used with the jack helper.

I just found this craftsman jack for sale and bought it tonight. Couldn't pass it up for only $49.99. We'll see how it does.

+1 on make sure you get the jack stands too (and use em) I won't get under my car without jackstands, or some other form of safety net (wheel or block under tire, etc) even with my behemoth snap on jack. Is massive, old, and weighs a ton, and it fits under the car so I imagine just about anything would.

I have had a craftsman jack fail in the past. Any brand could. I also have some big auto zone type store brand jack. I'm not sure why. The way the handle engages the valve to engage or release the jack is like a set of stamped gear teeth, which is very unreliable to try to get them to engage if the handle is in the down position. Extremely annoying. have not used it for years. Look for something with a universal joint, manual turn screw, or anything but a "gear" type set up.

While a jack is an extremely handy thing to have, it should be mentioned that one can do the HID conversion w/o removing a wheel.
