ELISE Aesthetics:
How does he ELISE look at it's best?
Top removed? Hardtop installed? Soft Top installed? A separate topic: How about the WHEELS? Silver Rims? Black Rims? Black/Silver Rims? Other colors? Sorry if this has been discussed before. If so, it's an update for newer forum members.... Thanks -Hal

I love the look with the top on, but prefer driving with the top off. Unfortunately, I live in an area where the top remains on for about 4 - 5 months. As for rims, I think it depends on the color of the car. I have an AW Elise and I think black wheels look the best, but I have seen other colors with silver rims and they look good.

I think the car looks best with the hard top on, followed by the top being off, followed by the soft top. I only use the soft top for short trips, otherwise I take off the top. And the car just looks good with the hard top on... more aggressive, I think.
As far as wheels go, I've never been much for anything fancy. I just like the standard silver color that the car comes with. Anything else just distracts from the car. Exception: if you have a completely black car, black wheels look good.

My Elise is AW, so the soft top looks like a toupee
Fortunately, I hardly use it. Black Elise with soft top is fine - almost indistinguishable from hard top from a distance. So, for me: 1) HardTop on 2) Topless For Elise, I like the standard silver wheels design better than the sports. I would go with black wheels only with the hard top on and I would go for aftermarket ones. For Exige, black wheels are a must regardless of the car color. |

...in profile, i think the elise's proportions are just a touch too squat looking, either too tall for its length or too short (lengthwise) for its height...that said, if one ignores the upper roofline and just follows the window and shroud joint, those lower, sleeker proportions are just perfect to my eyes: very rakish, smooth, and fast...i keep my top off and windows up almost all them time and love the way it accentuates that line...
...i have an arctic silver hardtop on my storm titanium car, and its interesting how the effect of a lighter roof is pronouncedly different from the darker soft top - it reduces the roof's visual weight and brings out that lower, sleeker line that i love...i've toyed with the notion of painting the rear window cowl the same arctic silver color, to further accentuate the effect (and keep things cooler in the summer, too), but i'm not particularly fond of how the softtop looks on the series one cars, which covers the same total area...still, dark versus light might not look as moustache-like, so i waver, and probably need to play with a few photoshop renderings to make a judgement call... ...likewise, i've considered the front access panels and exige scoops in arctic silver, too, just to contemplate the net effect along with mesh in lieu of louvers, but while it may look very sporting, it doesn't suit the classic feel i prefer on my own elise...i've yet to see any aftermarket wheels i prefer to the stock classic appearance, either...

I put my hardtop on for a track day in August and haven't taken it off since. I like driving topless, but I think the lines of the car are more natural with the top on.

I love the looks of the car with the hardtop on, but I love to drive 'er topless. I took the hardtop off the car in April '05 and have only had the soft top on since then -- only when absolutely necessary.
